The Great Northern Railway was cut through Potters Bar in 1850, when an unfinished station opened in Darkes Lane, but the line did not bring rapid change. By 1961 the Potters Bar urban district had 23,376 residents.

New building in the 1930s was mostly bungalows, between the High Street and Darkes Lane and around Baker Street. The town was in Middlesex until 1965 and had its own urban district until 1974, when it joined the borough of Hertsmere. At the 2021 Census its four wards had 22,536 residents between them.
Semis are the usual home. In Potters Bar Furzefield ward 61.6% of households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021. Potters Bar Parkfield had the most detached houses of the town's four wards, 32.9%, against 18.7% across Hertsmere, and three in four Parkfield households (75.0%) owned their home, 45.1% outright. Renting is less common than across the London boundary: 21.1% of Parkfield households and 15.2% in Furzefield rented privately, against 32.7% in the borough of Barnet. The houses are broken up by open ground. On either side of the High Street lie the parklands of Oakmere and Parkfield, with King George's Field to the west and the golf course beyond it.

Parking near Darkes Lane and the High Street
Hertsmere runs a controlled parking scheme in Potters Bar, split into lettered zones. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
