When it was laid out in the 1770s, Portland Place was the widest street in London of its day: a close of great houses, shut off at the south end by Foley House, where Langham Place is now, and open to the fields at the north.

Who lives on Portland Place
The Adam brothers took many of the original building plots, and John Nash later made the street part of his route from Regent's Park towards St James's. The 20th century rebuilt large parts of it. Wills and Kaula built Nos. 71-73 (1922-25) and No. 82 (1927) in Portland stone, Broadcasting House went up at the south end in 1932, and No. 66, built for the Royal Institute of British Architects, was finished in 1934. Westminster's conservation audit says the bigger buildings here are mostly embassies and the headquarters of institutions, with some mansion blocks and flats on upper floors.
The Census gives a mixed picture. In the Census area around the middle of Portland Place and the streets to its west (Westminster 011A), 696 households were counted in 2021. Just over half, 53.3%, lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 19.3% in part of a converted house, 12.2% in a whole terraced house and 9.2% in a commercial building, such as an office block, a hotel or rooms over a shop. 63.3% rented privately and 33.4% owned, most of those outright.
Where a Georgian house is still one home, the kitchen is often in the basement, a flight below the street. It only adds carrying. The racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand downstairs.

Embassy bays and loading on Portland Place
Portland Place is in Westminster's parking zone F, where paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and it is on the council's list of traffic-sensitive streets. With several embassies along it, one rule matters more than usual: the council's loading rules bar a van from stopping even briefly in specialist bays, such as diplomats' or doctors' bays. So the van uses an ordinary paid bay, usually limited to four hours, or a daily trades permit for zone F; Westminster has no visitor permits to offer.
