Portland Place is about 33 metres wide, and that is not an accident
Robert and James Adam laid it out for the Duke of Portland in the 1770s, and the width comes from a covenant to Lord Foley promising that his views north would not be blocked. Which is a long way of saying the van can usually get to a kerb here, unlike most of W1. The rest of the street is the Chinese and Polish embassies, the Royal Institute of British Architects at number 66, Broadcasting House at the bottom end, and mansion flats mixed in among all of it.
Residential floors sitting over institutional ones do one specific thing to a kitchen. The kitchen ends up wherever the plan allowed rather than on an outside wall, so the extractor is ducted a long run to daylight, and a long duct means the grease filter and the hood carry more than they would in a house. Great Portland Street is the same story with showrooms underneath instead of embassies.

Conversion flats around Langham Place and Riding House Street rarely have room for a range. A single integrated cavity is the norm, sometimes with a combination microwave stacked over it. That is the £77 job, ninety minutes or so, and if the hood over it has never been touched the extractor hood clean is £28 on top.

Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, which is the part that matters in a building where the floor below you is somebody's office and complaints about smells travel fast. The oven is heat-tested before we sign off.
Do you need building access cleared first?
For the portered blocks, yes, and a name on the desk is enough. We are insured and DBS-checked if the managing agent wants paperwork.
What about a combination microwave?
It is £22 and it comes off the same visit. The turntable and the roof plate are where the burnt-on sits.
Do you work around BBC hours?
We work seven days, so early mornings and Sundays are both bookable. Sunday is the quieter run into W1B by a long way.
Is the price different because it is central London?
No. £77 for a single here, same as anywhere. No call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
