On 14 February 1951 Mr and Mrs Albert Snoddy, their two children and a pet tortoise moved from Yattan Street into a three-bedroom flat in Gladstone House. They were the first tenants of the Lansbury estate.
The Lansbury estate, north of East India Dock Road
Lansbury was the ninth of the planned neighbourhoods for rebuilding Stepney and Poplar after the war, on ground once known as Poplar Fields, where bombing had destroyed or badly damaged almost a quarter of the buildings. The conservation area designated in January 1997 covers the post-war rebuilding. It runs from Stansby Road east to Chrisp Street, with Canton Street, Lindfield Street and Cordelia Street along its northern edge.
Most residential buildings inside it are two to four storeys high and grouped round small greens, as at Gladstone and Overstone Houses. The first blocks after the Festival of Britain, built in the mid to late 1950s, are mostly eleven storeys, with four-storey maisonettes, and on three sides of Market Square, a space of roughly 70 by 60 metres, the maisonettes sit above the shops. Frederick Gibberd designed the square, and its red-brick clock tower is built round two interlocking concrete staircases, one for going up and one for coming down.
A four-storey walk-up of that age may have no lift. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. The door is split where its design allows.

Lansbury ward takes in the estate, Chrisp Street and the streets round Langdon Park station. Parking either side of East India Dock Road
East India Dock Road is part of the A13, which Transport for London runs as a red route, so the van parks in a side street. North of the road, the streets round Chrisp Street Market are in zone B3 and controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday; further north, by Langdon Park station, B3 is controlled on weekdays only. South of the road, Poplar High Street is in zone D1, 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. The council's zone page adds that estate roads carry their own restrictions and that the one-hour free bays around the market are for shoppers on market days. A Sunday visit, at the weekday price, falls outside the permit hours on both sides of the road.

The square is pedestrianised, so the van has to park on a street nearby, and the streets round the market are in the Monday to Saturday part of zone B3. Give us the flat number and the staircase when you call.
