Sir Frederick Edridge, five times Mayor of Croydon, gave the top of Pollards Hill to Croydon's council in 1913. The 3.14 hectares inside Pollards Crescent are still a park, and from the viewpoint at the summit you can pick out Epsom Downs and, on a clear day, Windsor Castle.
Roads laid out before the houses
The street names are older than the streets. A survey of the Manor of Bensham made late in the 13th century, quoted on Croydon Council's page for the park, lists 60 acres of arable land in North Pollards Hill and 51 acres in South Pollards Hill. The road plan came before the houses as well: it is drawn on the 1868 map, marked by two avenues of trees, and the land round the hill was then built over, leaving only the crown open. Pollarded limes still line the roads.
Croydon's 2018 Local Plan calls the housing round here planned estates of semi-detached houses, and it names Pollards Hill South a Local Heritage Area for its terraces of the 1930s: Arts and Crafts terraces laid out to look like large U-shaped buildings, fronting the street through a sequence of courtyards. In the census area that takes in Pollards Hill South and Briar Road (Croydon 004E), the 2021 Census counted 563 households: 37.8% in a semi, 21.5% in a terrace and 20.4% in a detached house, with only 11.4% in a purpose-built flat. 72.7% owned their home, and 38.0% owned it outright.
A semi or a detached house is more likely than a flat to have room for a built-in double or a 90cm range cooker. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand at the cooker, on dust sheets laid before anything comes out.
Croydon on the slopes, Merton at the foot
Two councils share the hill. The roads round the park, Pollards Hill North and South, Pollards Crescent and Briar Road among them, are in Croydon's Norbury and Pollards Hill ward. The low-rise estate at the foot of the hill on the west side is Merton's, and so are its parking rules. Homes there are covered on the same terms; the Mitcham page deals with that side.
For the van, the two councils mean two sets of signs. On the Croydon side, the council's 2017 map of the Norbury permit zone shades the streets round Norbury station, down to Croindene Road, which is under a kilometre north of the park; the roads ringing the hill are outside it on that map. Zones change, so read the plate at the end of your road, and tell us when you book if there is a drive the van can use.

Your council tax bill will say. The roads on the slopes and round the park are Croydon; the estate to the west, towards Mitcham, is Merton. The prices are the same on both sides.
