Plumstead's trams started with horses: in 1881 the Woolwich and South East London Tramways Co. built a horse tramway with its depot at the bottom of Cage Lane, now Lakedale Road.
The grid of terraces east of the station
The streets in this grid were mostly laid out in the last great stage of building, between about 1870 and 1910, when the land of Park Farm in eastern Plumstead was cleared. Brewery Road, Lakedale, Riverdale, Rippolson and Purrett Roads date from that push, and builders worked east in straight crossing roads until there was housing from end to end. Plumstead Central (PC) is controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5.30pm, and a 2021 order changed its rules on roads including Ingledew Road, Liffler Road, Lakedale Road and part of Brewery Road. Plumstead Station (PL) is listed as Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 11am, though the same order gave some bays in it, such as on Raglan Road, Monday to Saturday hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm. A council plan for wider permit zones across Plumstead was dropped in August 2025. A Sunday visit falls outside both zones' hours and costs the same as a weekday; on other days, check the signs on your street and tell us the road name so we can plan where to park.
