On 1 July 1876 about a thousand people gathered outside the Old Mill on Plumstead Common, a windmill that had become a beerhouse, and followed John De Morgan of the Commons Protection League round the common pulling down new fences. He went to prison; the protest led to the Plumstead Common Act of 1878, under which about a hundred acres were bought for £1,000 as permanent public open space.

The council's 2010 appraisal of the Plumstead Common conservation area, designated in May 1976 and covering 72.7 hectares, counts three and a half miles of mainly two-storey late 19th-century terraced housing fronting the common. The area's streets include Blendon Terrace, Heathfield Terrace, St John's Terrace and stretches of Plumstead Common Road. In 1905 the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society built The Links, a parade of shops, on the site of a brickmaker's house.
The 2021 Census shows the pattern holding. Of the 5,860 households in Plumstead Common ward, 48.0% lived in a terraced house and 22.2% in a semi; only 16.3% were in purpose-built flats. Just over half (52.5%) owned their home.
A kitchen at the back of a terraced house has often been extended, and an extended kitchen is where a double oven or a 90cm range is likeliest to have gone in. The method is the same for each. Dust sheets go down, the oven's racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.

In the early 1970s a 17-storey block was proposed on the site of St Margaret's Church; after a public inquiry in 1973 it was cut to 12 storeys, and the 1902 Edwardian bandstand in Blendon Terrace was later demolished. The appraisal calls the housing towers in the Grosmont and St Margaret's areas visually unfortunate.

Parking near Plumstead Common Road
The appraisal notes that these streets were laid out with almost no off-street parking and that most front gardens are too small for a car, so the van parks on the road. Greenwich's January 2026 notice for the Woolwich scheme proposed bringing streets at the west end of the common into the Woolwich Common (WB) zone, including single yellow lines on Plumstead Common Road and restrictions on St Margaret's Grove and Vicarage Road, controlled seven days a week from 8am to 6.30pm. A cabinet member agreed on 14 August 2026 that the scheme should go ahead. Look at the nearest sign before booking.
