Plashet was a hamlet where Plashet Lane, now Plashet Grove, met Red Post Lane, now Katherine Road. The Fry family lived at Plashet House from 1784 to 1829, Elizabeth Fry from 1809, and Katherine Road is named after her daughter.
Plashet's 1880s terraces
Plashet House came down in about 1883, the year its estate was sold for building between St Stephen's Road and Plashet Grove. By 1890 houses were going up across the whole of Plashet from Green Street to High Street North. The grounds of Plashet Hall became Sherrard, Halley, Strone and Monega Roads. The county history describes the result as long terraces of small but well-built houses for clerks and skilled workers.
The grounds of another house, Wood House, were bought in 1889 by the vicar of East Ham and J H Bethell, with a grant of £3,000 from the City Parochial Trust, and opened as Plashet Park in 1891. Woodhouse Grove, on one side of the park, keeps the name. The Grade II listed Passmore Edwards library of 1899 stands beside the park on Plashet Grove.
Terraces of that kind usually have the kitchen in a narrow back addition, so the oven can be a built-in single or double, under the worktop or in a tall housing, depending on how the kitchen was refitted. The racks, trays and side runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen.

Newham's Plashet ward, drawn in 2022 around Plashet Park and Plashet School, had 2,947 households at the 2021 Census. Plashet's three parking zones keep the same hours
Plashet is split between three of Newham's resident parking zones. Sherrard, Halley, Strone and Monega Roads, with Shrewsbury Road, are in the Monega zone, Henderson and Sandringham Roads in Green Street North, and the streets round Plashet Park, such as Woodhouse Grove, in the East Ham zone. The council lists all three as controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. So Sunday is the one day with no permit hours; we work seven days, and a Sunday visit costs the same as any other.

Is Plashet in E6, E7 or E12?
All three are used here. Henderson Road is E7, Plashet Grove is E6 and Woodhouse Grove is E12. The price is the same on every side, as it is in Upton Park to the south.
The oven has not been cleaned in years. Will it come up?
The racks and trays are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and glass are degreased by hand. When it is reassembled and lit, you inspect it, and any corner that is not right is put right before we leave.
