Plashet started as a hamlet where Plashet Lane met Red Post Lane, the road now called Katherine Road. Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer, lived at Plashet House from 1809 to 1829 and her daughter Katherine at Plashet Cottage, and both were pulled down in the 1880s so that the terraced streets which now define the place could be built across them; by 1890 work was under way over the whole of Plashet from Green Street to High Street North. Plashet Park opened in 1891, on land bought from the Wood House Estate with help from the Corporation of the City of London.
Bay fronts and back kitchens
The stock is late-Victorian and Edwardian terrace, put up for railway and dock workers, and the Plashet Grove streets run to substantial bay-fronted houses. The kitchen is at the back, usually in an addition. Racks, shelves, trays and runners come out to the heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products. A microwave is £22 if you want it done too.
The old institutions are homes now
The Stepney parish of St George's-in-the-East set up an industrial school at Plashet in 1851, at the junction of Shaftesbury Road and Green Street, and the Whitechapel Board of Guardians put the buildings up in 1852-54. It became a workhouse, then a general hospital, then a maternity hospital, and it is a residential development today, Gladys Dimson House. Plashet Road has a newer one on a former Victorian school site: 55 affordable homes, a community centre and a nursery. Flats like that come with one integrated oven, the £77 job.
Newham calls them RPZs
Newham runs resident parking zones rather than CPZs, each with its own permit-only hours, and these terraces went up long before anyone here owned a car, so it is on-street or nothing. We want a space near the front, because parts travel to the van and back. Our problem. No premium for E7, no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.

One cavity is a single at £77 and takes about ninety minutes. Two cavities, even behind one door front, is a double at £110.
Will the house smell afterwards?
It should not. The soaking happens out in the van, the indoor work is non-caustic, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.
Can you come at the weekend?
Yes, seven days. Everyone is insured and DBS-checked.
