Greengate House on Greengate Street opened in 1921 as a YMCA club and later housed an art college. From a village of 159 houses to Plaistow North ward
In the 1740s Plaistow village was a rough triangle of what are now High Street, North Street and Richmond Street, with houses along Balaam Street and Greengate Street. Balaam Street is first recorded in 1364-5 and is named after the Balun family, who were at Plaistow by 1183. Between 1742 and about 1780 the number of houses in Plaistow rose only from 152 to 159. New streets had been laid out north and south-west of the village by 1855, and the opening of the London, Tilbury and Southend loop line to Barking in 1858, with a station at Plaistow Road, stimulated more building.
Some 14,000 houses in the old West Ham borough, over a quarter of the total, were destroyed in the Second World War. Between 1945 and 1965 the borough council's redevelopment and slum clearance schemes involved over 9,500 new dwellings, with Grange Road, Plaistow among the large ones.
The 2021 Census gives the present mix. In Plaistow North ward, 39.7% of the 5,740 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 31.4% in a terraced house and 11.1% in part of a converted or shared house. A council-built flat or a divided terrace can have a narrow kitchen with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single, and stairs down to the street. Stairs do not change the method: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
