Plaistow gives us two kinds of kitchen. The small Victorian terraces off Balaam Street and Greengate Street were put up in the 1880s and 1890s for dockworkers, and those have tight rear kitchens with a freestanding cooker. Then there are the 1960s council maisonettes raised on wartime bomb sites, where the oven is often an older built-in unit that has never had a deep clean since the day it was fitted, and it is those that take the longest to bring back. Greengate Street and Barking Road (A124) are the busy stretches to avoid. Around the new Plaistow Hub flats by the tube station the layout is tighter, but there is usually a bay to be had.
