The oldest flats on Piccadilly have no road to the front door
Albany, set back from Piccadilly behind its courtyard, was built as Melbourne House between 1771 and 1776 and carved up in 1802 into 69 bachelor sets. Henry Holland put two long parallel buildings over the garden and joined them with the Ropewalk, a covered walkway on thin iron columns running back towards Burlington Gardens. Byron lived in one. Gladstone in another. What that means for a working day is that the kit walks in, because no van gets down the Ropewalk, and the racks walk back out again to the tank.
The sets are Georgian rooms with kitchens fitted into them later, so the cooker tends to be a single cavity in a run of joinery under a high ceiling with the extractor ducted somewhere awkward. Clarges Mayfair, at 82 to 84 Piccadilly on the Clarges Street corner, is the other end of the range: 34 flats over ten floors, gated mews, secure drop-off, and a kitchen specified with the building.
Driving in costs us, not you
W1J sits inside the Congestion Charge zone, which went to £18 a day on 2 January 2026 and now runs 7am to 6pm on weekdays plus noon to 6pm at weekends. That is our overhead, not a line on your invoice, and there is no premium-area surcharge for a Mayfair postcode or a call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.

Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank in the van; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. A hob clean alongside is £23–28, which is what most of the induction tops in the newer W1J kitchens need rather than a full strip.
How long will you be in the flat?
Ninety minutes for a single, about two hours for a double. The soak happens outside in the van while we work indoors, which is why it is not longer.
Do you clean the pyrolytic ones?
Yes. A pyrolytic cycle burns the cavity but leaves the racks, the door glass and the fan cover, and those are the parts we do.
Will there be a smell afterwards?
No. The caustic stays in the tank outside. Indoors it is non-caustic product and hand work, then the oven gets heat-tested before we sign it off.
Can you park at Clarges?
The gated mews there has a drop-off, which helps. Elsewhere on Piccadilly it is a side street and a walk.
