Apsley House, at the Hyde Park Corner end, was called Number 1 London because it was the first house on the north side of Piccadilly, facing a turnpike. Robert Adam built it in 1771-78; after the Wellington Museum Act of 1947 part became a museum and part stayed a family residence.
Few households at the western end of Piccadilly
Westminster's 2004 guide to the Mayfair conservation area places Mayfair's big blocks of flats, hotels and offices mainly on Park Lane, Piccadilly, Berkeley Square and Hanover Square. The Census area that takes in Hamilton Place, Old Park Lane, Hertford Street, Shepherd Market and Half Moon Street (Westminster 018D) counted only 698 households in 2021. Of those, 73.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 8.9% in a terraced house, while 5.5% lived in a commercial building, such as a hotel, an office or rooms over a shop.
Hertford Street keeps several listed Georgian houses. Number 10, listed Grade I, went up in about 1768-69, built by the elder Henry Holland of Fulham with his son and John Eldridge: brown brick, a stuccoed ground floor, four storeys over a basement. Houses of that date usually had the kitchen below the street. Where the cooker is still down there, the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the stairs only add to the time.
Most households here rent: 56.2% privately in 2021, against 35.7% who owned. New flats at 82-84 Piccadilly
The newest homes on this stretch are at Clarges, 82-84 Piccadilly. British Land bought the site in 2012 and finished it in 2017 with offices, shops and 34 flats over ten floors. Albany, further east on Piccadilly
Further along the street, behind a small forecourt, is Albany: Melbourne House, built by Sir William Chambers in 1771-4 and turned into sets of chambers by Henry Holland in 1802-3, with two ranges running north to Burlington Gardens and a covered way between them, the Ropewalk. In the Survey of London's description, the ground-floor sets have their kitchens in the basement and the upper sets theirs in the garret. A set is a walk from the street, so mention the floor when you call.

Parking for the van in zone E
Hyde Park Corner and Park Lane are Transport for London red routes, so the van needs a side street. Everything from Hamilton Place to Albany is in Westminster's zone E, Mayfair and St James's. Its paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and its resident bays 24 hours a day, bank holidays included.
The council issues no visitor permits for street parking, and a commercial vehicle may load in a paid or resident bay for 20 minutes during controlled hours. A single oven takes about 90 minutes, so the van needs a paid bay or a zone E trade permit (resident bays 8am to 5.30pm, paid bays 8.30am to 6.30pm, while work goes on at the address). If your building has a drop-off, mention it when you call.

Let the concierge know the date and tell us about any service entrance or drop-off. We also need a working socket and the oven cool when we arrive.
