Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819 to join Regent Street to Piccadilly. Six streets meet there now (Piccadilly, Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, the Haymarket, Coventry Street and Glasshouse Street), and much of its south side was pedestrianised in the 1980s.
The few homes around the Circus
People do live here, in small numbers. At the 2021 Census the output area that starts at the Circus and runs south past the top of the Haymarket and down Lower Regent Street to Pall Mall, about 25 hectares, had 117 households. Of those, 73.5% rented privately and 21.4% owned, and 15 households (12.8%) lived in a building converted from another use, such as a former school, church or warehouse.
A short walk west, the old Regent Palace Hotel on Glasshouse Street was redeveloped by the Crown Estate as Quadrant 3, completed in 2011, with offices, shops, restaurants and bars, and some flats. The Crown Estate lets furnished homes across Regent Street and St James's.
A furnished flat in a converted or rebuilt block usually has a fitted kitchen and a built-in oven, and when a tenancy ends the inventory clerk opens it. Agents can have the invoice made out to the agency, photos of the finished oven for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat collected by arrangement.

The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows. Every appliance has one fixed price, agreed on the phone. A single takes about 90 minutes, a double about 2 hours and a 90cm range 2 to 3 hours.
Two parking zones meet at Piccadilly Circus
On Westminster's zone map the line between zone E (Mayfair and St James's) and zone G (Soho, the West End and Covent Garden) comes down the curve of Regent Street, crosses the Circus and runs south along the Haymarket.

The hours match on both sides: paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and resident bays in E1 and G1 are controlled 24 hours a day. Westminster runs no visitor permit scheme on its streets, so the van pays for a bay by app.
