A document from 1535 records a Pypesbrige here, probably after a local family, and the Wandle at this point still marks the old boundary between Mitcham and Merton. The estate came much later and on rough ground: it was built through the 1950s and 1960s over a municipal refuse depot on Homewood Road and some poor late-Victorian housing, opened as a show-piece, and took about ten years to slide back. In 1993 Merton Council approved pulling down four high-rise blocks and putting up 346 dwellings in their place. The tram arrived in May 2000.
Rebuilt low-rise, and mostly freestanding cookers
What that rebuilding left is a stock of low-rise houses, maisonettes and small blocks rather than towers, a good share of it social or ex-social and now under Clarion, whose wider Merton programme runs to 2,800 new homes with 740 at social rent. Kitchens in that kind of stock are usually a fitted run with a freestanding 50cm or 60cm cooker standing in a gap, oven below and four burners on top, not the integrated column you get in a new-build flat. That is the £77 single. The burners, pan supports and the caps come off and go into the tank with the shelves, but the hob is priced separately at £23–28, so hob cleaning is worth saying yes to while everything is already out.
The postcode does not touch the bill

The cooker is old and the enamel is worn. Can you still clean it?
Usually. Worn enamel goes dull and stays dull once the grease is off, and we will say so before starting rather than promise you a finish the surface cannot give.
My landlord is Clarion. Do they arrange this or do I?
Either. We take the booking from whoever is paying, tenant or landlord, and the price is the same.
Do you take the burners away?
Only as far as the van. Burner caps, pan supports, shelves, trays and runners soak in the heated tank outside and come back before we go.
Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
