Petersham has been a village since at least the early medieval period, and St Peter's Church still has 13th-century fabric under its 18th-century brick bell tower.
Mansions on Petersham Road, cottages to the south
In the 17th and 18th centuries the village, close to Ham House and Richmond, drew the wealthy, and the northern half of Petersham Road is lined with their mansions: Rutland Lodge, Montrose House and Petersham House among them, two or three storeys of brick in large grounds behind high walls. Petersham was hemmed in by parkland and grew only slowly after that. South of the bend, the east side of the road has large houses of the 18th century or later in mature gardens, while the west side is closer-packed, and Nos. 209 to 237 are a run of terraced cottages of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Sudbrook Lane has smaller 18th-century houses behind brick walls, and Bute Avenue has All Saints' Church (early 20th century), its village hall and vicarage, all in deep red brick and terracotta. Petersham Nurseries was carved out of the grounds of a house in the 1960s and has been open to the public since 2004.

In the small 2021 Census area that covers the village, from River Lane to Sandpits Road and Bute Avenue (Richmond upon Thames 012C), 37.4% of the 619 households lived in a detached house, against 8.3% across the borough, and only 3.9% in a purpose-built block of flats. 69.0% owned their home.

Parking for the van in Petersham
