The A307 through Petersham is narrow enough that when a sewer collapsed under it in 1979 the road stayed shut for the best part of eighteen months, an episode people here still call the Petersham Hole. It has not got wider since. For under 100 metres the road kinks west with the meadows on one side and listed walls on the other, and there is nowhere sensible to leave a van, which is the fact that shapes every job we take in this village.

What we want is a driveway, or a spot on River Lane or Sudbrook Lane. If your house fronts the A307 we ask at the booking whether we can pull onto the gravel. Most people can say yes. The ones who can't get an early slot instead.
The Petersham Road mansions decide what we bring
Rutland Lodge, Montrose House, Petersham House: the road is lined with listed 17th and 18th century houses, and the conservation area around them was designated in January 1969 and extended in September 1982 south to Sandy Lane. Kitchens in houses like those are old back rooms and sculleries knocked through, and they take the big cookers. Behind them the cottages off Sudbrook Lane and the flats towards Ham run to ordinary 60cm doubles, and the price drops to match.

Can you get a van down River Lane?
Yes, and on the meadows side it is usually the best bet. Sudbrook Lane works too. What does not work is stopping on the A307 for two hours while the racks soak.
