Until the twentieth century Perivale was one of the smallest parishes in Middlesex: 633 acres, fewer than 100 people, and in 1841 just five inhabited buildings, all of them farmhouses.
Perivale's 1930s houses, between the railway and the canal
Western Avenue changed that. Ealing council's local history records that factories went up along it, along Horsenden Lane and beside the canal between 1930 and 1939, Sanderson's wallpaper works of 1929 was one of the first, and the Hoover factory facing Western Avenue was perhaps the best known. Houses came with them, much of it at first north of Western Avenue, between the railway line and the canal. For those in work, prices were reasonable: a house on the Perivale Park Estate cost £725 freehold, and others cost £590.
The streets around Bilton Road and Walmgate Road, on the Alperton side of Perivale, are still almost all houses. In the Census small area that covers them (Ealing 005C), 45.4% of the 478 households lived in a semi in 2021 and 44.4% in a terrace; just 1.7% were in a purpose-built flat. 70.6% owned their home, and 41.0% owned it outright. Another 27.1% rented privately, and since 3 January 2023 a private let in the old Perivale ward has needed a selective licence from the council. On Western Avenue, the main building of the Hoover factory, listed Grade II*, was converted into 66 flats, completed in 2018.
A house that has had the same owners for decades has often had its kitchen refitted at least once, so the cooker could be a 60cm freestanding model, a built-in double at eye level, or a range in a knocked-through room.
Single, double or range: what changes on the day
The method stays the same. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows. Dust sheets go down first. The time on site depends on the cooker:

Parking in Perivale: Zone P by the station
Bilton Road and Walmgate Road are on none of Ealing's 63 controlled zone lists, so there are no permit hours to plan around, though the street signs still decide where the team can park and Bilton Road carries the 297 bus. Near the station it is different. Zone P takes in Bideford Avenue (numbers 1 to 49), Tavistock Avenue, Dawlish Avenue and Teignmouth Gardens among others, plus Horsenden Lane South from number 20 to 184. It is controlled from 9am to 10am and from 2pm to 3pm on weekdays. Perivale Lane, by St Mary's church, is Zone PL, an hour later each time: 10am to 11am and 3pm to 4pm.

Is Perivale part of Ealing or Greenford?
Ealing. The parish was merged into Ealing on 1 October 1926, and Ealing council runs the parking zones, but the post town on a UB6 address here is still Greenford.
We are on the river-named streets near the A40. Is that Perivale?
It is Perivale ward, but those streets, Medway Drive and Thames Avenue among them, sit north-east of South Greenford station and have their own South Greenford page.
The gas hob is as greasy as the oven. Can both be done?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 on top of the oven price, and a single oven, hob and extractor booked together are £117.
Does a weekend visit cost more?
No, weekends are charged at the weekday price. Zone P and Zone PL are weekday zones on the council's lists, so at a weekend their permit hours do not apply; other restrictions are shown on the street signs.
