Parsons Green takes its name from the parsonage house where the rectors of Fulham lived. The green itself is still a triangle crossed by diagonal paths, though its pond was filled in by the mid-1890s.
Three centuries of houses round the triangle
Most buildings facing the green are three storeys high, and they were built over three centuries. On New King's Road, along the south side, Nos. 237 to 245 are a terrace of three-bay houses dated 1795, and Aragon House at No. 247 followed in 1805 or 1806; both are listed Grade II. On the east side, Lady Margaret School occupies Belfield House and Elm House, both from about 1800, and Henniker House from about 1841. St Dionis' Church, designed by Ewan Christian in 1884 and 1885, stands on the west side with a red-brick tower added in 1896, and the White Horse holds the northern point. Along Parsons Green Lane, Nos. 20 to 36 are a late Victorian terrace with almost all its original features, and on New King's Road east of the green, Nos. 26 to 38 are three storeys of shops with flats above, a turret marking the corner at No. 26. The council made the green a conservation area in August 1975.
Over a shop or in a house divided into flats, the oven is usually a compact built-in or a slim freestanding cooker up a staircase. Parking round the green: zones Q and R
On the council's parking map the green, St Dionis Road and the streets south of it are in zone Q, while Parsons Green Lane and the station are in zone R. The council's zone table gives the same hours for both, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and parking in either is free outside those hours. The council has decided to move three streets of zone R, Shottendane Road, Harbledown Road and Elmstone Road, to controls every day from 8.30am to 10pm with a two-hour maximum stay, and has not yet given a start date (see its zone consultations page). Is Sunday a good day to book?
For parking, yes in zone Q and in most of zone R, which are not controlled on a Sunday; the three zone R streets above will be once their new controls start. Weekend visits cost the same as weekdays.
