Park Royal began as a showground
The name comes from the showground the Royal Agricultural Society opened here in 1903 as a permanent site for its show; the society sold it after three years. Coronation Road was built to serve the show. The first factory went up on it in 1913; in the First World War Park Royal was a large horse compound for the Royal Army Service Corps, and from 1929 the firm Allnatts built cheap all-purpose factories on what became the Chase estate, at just over one a fortnight.
That is still the picture round Park Royal Road, Gorst Road and Sunbeam Road, in Ealing's North Acton ward. The street list for Ealing's Park Royal parking zone is a run of trading estates, business centres and numbered units, with few front doors among them.
Houses Guinness built off Twyford Abbey Road
Guinness bought land on the old boundary between West and East Twyford in 1933. Its brewery, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and Alexander Gibb, opened in 1936, and the company built houses for its workers in Iveagh Avenue, named, like Moyne Place, after people and places connected with the Guinness family. Other housing went up nearby at the same time, Brentmead Gardens in 1934 and 1935, and in 1948 Guinness added 46 houses at Moyne Place. West Twyford had 311 people in 1931 and 2,995 by 1951.
In the census area round Moyne Place and Abbeyfields Close (Ealing 011A), 35.2% of the 696 households lived in a semi in 2021, and 48.0% rented privately. Kitchens in houses of the 1930s and 1940s were usually built for a freestanding cooker; many have since been refitted with a built-in single or double.
Flats on the old brewery land
Brewing stopped in 2005 and the brewery came down in 2006. Its site, across the borough line in Brent, now has Redrow's Royal Waterside, 265 flats finished in 2015, and Fairview's Regency Heights, 807 homes up to 26 storeys, finished in 2022. In the census area on Lakeside Drive (Brent 027I) there were 796 households in 2021: 98.2% in purpose-built flats, 49.8% renting privately and 6.5% in shared ownership.
