From a hamlet to a village of cul-de-sacs
In 1911 the Victoria County History described "Ockshot" as a hamlet a mile and a half north-east of Stoke D'Abernon church, where a number of houses had been built since the railway opened. The station, at first called Oxshott and Fairmile, had opened in 1885.
Elmbridge's design guide explains the shape of what followed. Large houses with grounds were sold off one by one, and each parcel became its own small estate set round a crescent or a cul-de-sac: Danes Way, Knott Park and the Waverley Road estate are its examples. Birds Hill and the other private estates
The Birds Hill Estate, just north of the High Street, and Bevendean are Crown Estate land, which Elmbridge's Core Strategy recognises as an area of special low-density residential development. Birds Hill is a private estate with limited access and no through public access. Houses sit on very large plots, often hidden behind beech hedges, and the guide records many older houses replaced by much larger ones with garages and outbuildings. Between the two estates, The Gables and The Warren were built in the late 20th century in the grounds of Pinewoods, a much-extended late Victorian house listed Grade II.
A large house on a plot like these may have a range cooker or an AGA. Either way, the racks, shelves and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavities and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets. Parking near Oxshott High Street
Elmbridge's Steels Lane car park, at the junction with the A244 and close to the shops, has 30 spaces; charges apply from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. On the public roads, Surrey County Council sets the restrictions, and in February 2026 it approved new double yellow lines on The Warren, from Fairoak Lane down to The Gables, to improve sightlines; the one resident who commented said parked cars blocked the view of traffic coming up Fairoak Lane. On a private estate road the drive is usually the easiest place for the van.
