The Grade II listed gasholder frame beside the Oval cricket ground was the largest gasholder in the world when it first went up in 1847. It was rebuilt in 1877-79, just before England's first home Test was played on the ground in 1880, and listed in March 2016.
New flats inside the gasholder frame
The gasholder was decommissioned in 2014, and the site is Berkeley Homes' Oval Village scheme: eight blocks of 4 to 19 storeys with more than 1,300 homes and a replacement Tesco. Inside the restored frame of Gasholder No. 1, The Halo, a block of nearly 200 homes, topped out in May 2025, with residents expected from 2028.
New-build flats usually come with integrated ovens, a built-in single under the worktop or a double in a tall unit, and some have a pyrolytic self-clean setting. The two ways of cleaning compare like this:

- the oven heats its own cavity far above cooking temperature and turns grease to ash; the racks and runners usually have to come out first, and the glass between the door panes is left as it was

Oval Mansions, the tenement blocks by the ground
Between the ground and the gasholder stand the eight tenement blocks of Oval Mansions, built in the 1890s. The Independent noted in 1998 that the fourth floor had views over the cricket. The blocks were closed in 1979, with wooden stairs and no fire escapes, and in June 1997 Lambeth, which owned them, served eviction notices on the squatters then living there, about 100 people by the Independent's count.
The older houses line the roads round the ground. Harleyford Road was built under an Act of 1818; before that, the Survey of London (1956) notes, there was no access to the Oval from Kennington Lane, and it recorded a terrace on the road with a panel reading "Clun Terrace 1826". South-east of the ground, Lambeth's St Mark's conservation area, first designated in 1969 as Hanover Gardens, is described by the council as smart terraced housing from the early 19th century onwards, with St Mark's Church as its principal landmark.
In a walk-up block or a converted house, the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity is done in your kitchen on dust sheets.
Renting in Oval ward
Oval ward takes in three postcode districts: Hanover Gardens is SE11, Ashmole Street and Claylands Road are SW8, and Crewdson Road is SW9. At the 2021 Census it had 5,529 households, and 37.9% of them rented privately. Another 35.5% rented from the council or a housing association and 25.8% owned their home. More than half, 56.4%, lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 24.1% in part of a converted house.

The appliance sets the price. A single, a double, a 90cm range and an AGA each have one figure, and the figure agreed on the phone is what you pay, on a weekday or at the weekend.
Parking the van near the ground
Lambeth has 24 controlled parking zones, mainly in the north of the borough. Where a zone applies, its hours are on the sign as you drive in and each bay has its own time plate; the first letter of the code on the plate is the zone. Yes, by the same method as any other oven: the racks and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand.
I live on the top floor of a walk-up block. Does that matter?
Only for timing, so mention the floor when you ring.
Is a Saturday visit dearer?
No. We work seven days a week and weekends cost the weekday price, which helps if your street's controls are weekday-only.
How long will a double oven take?
About 2 hours on site. A single takes about 90 minutes and a 90cm range 2 to 3 hours.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
