Murray House on Murray Road began as Chertsey's workhouse in 1836. From 1932 it was an annexe of Botleys Park Hospital, it closed in 1984, and its entrance block (listed Grade II) and chapel are now homes, converted by Bellway Homes; most of the other buildings have gone.

Murray House is not the only institution in Ottershaw that became housing. Ottershaw Park, an estate whose first house went up in 1761, did too. Surrey County Council bought it in 1945 and ran Ottershaw School there, a state boarding school for boys, from 1948 until it closed in 1980; since 1981 the site, 148 acres in the school's day, has been redeveloped as a residential estate.
The village itself grew from separate hamlets in the mid-19th century and became a parish in 1871, a few years after Christ Church was consecrated in 1864. Sir Edward Colebrooke built the church on his Ottershaw Park estate in memory of his son and heir, to a design by Sir George Gilbert Scott, and it is listed Grade II.
A flat made out of a former institution often has its kitchen in a room built for another purpose, with a built-in single or double fitted into new units. The method suits it. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays and fan cover come out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand where the oven stands.

Ottershaw's census areas differ sharply. In one that takes in part of Slade Road (Runnymede 008D), 48.6% of the 628 households lived in a detached house and 85.0% owned their home. In the area that takes in Slade Court, Palmer Crescent, Escott Place and Murray Road (Runnymede 008B), 28.8% lived in a purpose-built flat, 26.4% in a terrace and 23.8% rented from the council or a housing association.

Yellow lines on Slade Road and Brox Road
Surrey County Council's 2025 parking review decided in October 2025 to tighten two village roads. On Slade Road the double yellow lines are to be extended to the driveway of No. 67, because vans parking in an unrestricted stretch were blocking sightlines. On Brox Road they are to go around the entrance to Ottershaw Social Club and further along the west side to No. 136. Nobody objected to either. A drive is the best place for the van; if you have none, say so when you book.
