Osidge is a medieval name, written Huzeheg in the 12th century; the '-idge' is a hedge, perhaps one that marked the edge of Enfield Chase.
Lipton's estate and the 1930s semis
Osidge House, built in 1808 and now 151 Chase Side, was bought in 1893 by Thomas Lipton, the tea merchant who raced the yacht Shamrock for the America's Cup. After his death in 1931 most of his 60-acre estate was built over with houses and Osidge School, and the house became the Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Hostel for retired nurses, opened on 21 September 1935. It has been listed at Grade II since 1982.
Davis Estates led the building of the new suburb, whose two main roads, Hampden Way and Osidge Lane, meet at the Hampden Square roundabout. At 212 Hampden Way and 126 Whitehouse Way the firm put up a flat-roofed, rendered pair based on its 1934 Ideal Home Exhibition design for a 'Village of Tomorrow'.
In the Census area the House of Commons Library calls Osidge (Barnet 009), 64.5% of the 2,744 households lived in a semi in 2021, against 27.5% across Barnet; only 4.0% lived in a purpose-built flat. Of the same households 82.0% owned their home and 42.1% owned it outright.
A kitchen in a 1930s semi may have been extended or refitted since, so the oven could now be a freestanding cooker, a built-in double or a range in a knocked-through room. Osidge is in Barnet, not Southgate
Osidge is often taken for part of Southgate, and in the 1930s Davis Estates marketed it that way, stressing the new Southgate and Arnos Grove tube stations. It was traditionally part of East Barnet, in Hertfordshire until 1965, and has been in the London Borough of Barnet since. The Enfield border is just to the east; Southgate Green is on the other side of it.
