The Orsett Show has had a permanent ground on Rectory Road since the estate was sold in 1968, and it still runs on the first Saturday in September. Before that it was held in the park at Orsett Hall, where it started in 1895. Orsett sits three miles north-east of Grays.
A workhouse became a hospital and is now a housing allocation
The Orsett Poor Law Union was formed on 10 October 1835, and the workhouse went up on Rowley Road in 1837 at a cost of £3,115, built to Sampson Kempthorne's standard 200-pauper layout. From 1917 only the sick were admitted and it became Orsett Lodge Hospital. The 1960s replaced the old buildings. Services are being moved out to Integrated Medical Centres at Corringham, Tilbury, Purfleet and Grays, and the Thurrock Local Plan proposes 90 to 110 homes on the 22-acre site, which would mean a run of kitchens with integrated single ovens where the wards are now.
One small village, four separate building phases
The built-up area held 1,461 people at the 2021 census. The stock is layered rather than uniform: Victorian workmen's cottages on Maltings Lane, Orsett House and other early-18th-century houses off the High Street, a School Lane development of 1954-55, and an estate laid out between Stanford Road and the golf course in the late 1980s and 1990s. Older detached houses in this sort of Essex village often run a range or a cast-iron cooker, and a two-oven AGA is £143 whatever the address.
Access is off the A13, not through the village
The Orsett Cock Interchange ties the A13 to the A128 Brentwood Road and the A1013 Stanford Road, so the van comes in from the trunk road rather than the lanes. There is no controlled parking zone to buy a visitor bay in. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank in the van; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors.

Do you come out to the farms and lanes, or only the village centre?
Both. The rate is the same either way.
Will the kitchen smell afterwards?
It should not. The soaking is done outside in the van, and the products used indoors are non-caustic.
How long does a double take?
About two hours. A single is nearer ninety minutes, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
