The Orsett Hospital site on Rowley Road began as the Orsett Union workhouse, built in 1837 to hold 200 paupers. It became a hospital in the 20th century, and the old buildings were replaced in the 1960s.
Terraces on the old hospital grounds
Part of the hospital land is now housing. Thurrock Council's rural settlement assessment (December 2023) puts that development at 30 to 40 homes per hectare, denser than most of the village, and says its houses are mostly terraced, two or two and a half storeys high, with rooms in the roof behind dormers. The roads are wider than in the old centre, with trees and parking taking up the extra width.
Houses of that age usually came with a fitted kitchen and a built-in oven, single or double, and some have a pyrolytic setting.
Pyrolytic cycle or a hand clean?
A pyrolytic cycle heats the empty cavity until grease turns to ash. It is useful between cleans, but the racks and side runners usually have to come out first, and the cycle does not reach between the panes of the door glass. A hand clean deals with those: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity and glass are degreased indoors, and the door is split where its design allows. Orsett's conservation area
The old village has been a conservation area since 1973. Opposite the churchyard on High Road, nos. 11 and 13 are 15th-century timber-framed houses and No. 15 is 16th-century. Off Rectory Road, Fordhams Row and South View are two 19th-century brick terraces of cottages, and a few pre-war terraces on Maltings Lane and Rowley Road reach 80 to 100 homes per hectare. North-west of the centre is a post-war council-built development of mostly semi-detached houses.
The census shows that spread. In Thurrock 004A, the census area covering Orsett village and the fields to its west, 735 households were counted in 2021: 38.6% lived in semi-detached houses, 30.2% in detached and 21.5% in terraces. Of those households, 72.8% owned their home and 16.6% rented privately. A tenancy that ends usually means an oven check, so letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name and photos for the checkout file.

Parking in Orsett
Thurrock Council's list of roads in each parking zone has no road in Orsett village. The Orsett Road on that list is in Grays. Rectory Road is wide north of High Road, and the team needs somewhere to park close to the house.

Yes. Grays is Orsett's post town, three miles away; the Thurrock area pages are grouped under Grays.
Is a listed cottage on High Road any different to clean?
The method is the same. Dust sheets go down first, the removable parts come out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the rest is cleaned by hand indoors.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours. A single takes about 90 minutes, and you look at the oven, lit, before we pack up.
Do you cover Baker Street, just west of the village?
Yes. Baker Street is in the same council ward as Orsett; tell us the road when you book so we know where the van can stop.
