Crown House, an office block at 145 City Road on the Hackney corner of the Old Street junction, was demolished to make way for the Atlas, a 40-storey tower of 302 flats finished in July 2019. Hackney's planning committee resolved to grant permission in February 2013, when the scheme was a 39-storey tower; its officers said the site lies in a cluster of tall buildings.
Two census areas north of the junction
The census cuts the Hackney streets above Old Street into small areas, and two neighbouring ones come out almost in reverse. In the one that takes in the Atlas, Corsham Street and Haberdasher Street (Hackney 032C), 61.9% of the 881 households rented privately in 2021. Next door, round Charles Square, Cranwood Street and Brunswick Place (Hackney 032D), 61.8% of 848 households rented from a social landlord, 48.7% from the council itself. In both, about nine households in ten lived in a purpose-built block of flats.
Charles Square is in that second area. It was begun in 1684 and finished around 1770, and one house survives from that time: No. 16, three storeys of red brick from 1726 or 1727, listed at Grade II*. The rest of the square was cleared for blocks of flats between about 1950 and 1955, and in 1961 Shoreditch Metropolitan Borough Council approved Shoreditch House on the square, 16 storeys and 55 homes. Haberdasher Street, further north, came later: land there was conveyed to trustees of the Haberdashers' Company in 1690, and the first building lease on that estate, covering the site of Haberdashers' Street, was granted in 1802.
Kitchens in blocks of that age often have a freestanding cooker, and some have been refitted with a built-in single. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, over dust sheets.

Moving out of a tower flat
In the census area with the tower, where six homes in ten are let privately, the oven is a line on the checkout inventory whenever a tenancy ends. The invoice can go to the letting agency, photos for the checkout file are taken if the agent asks, and keys for an empty flat can be collected by arrangement. Newer flats sometimes have a pyrolytic oven, which cleans its own cavity at a very high heat. The two kinds of clean do different jobs:
- Pyrolytic cycle
- burns grease in the cavity to ash, which still has to be wiped out; racks and runners usually come out first and stay as they were
- Professional hand clean
- racks, trays and runners are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and glass are done by hand

Parking the van off Old Street
Old Street at the junction is a red route under Transport for London's traffic orders, so the van goes into a side street. TfL switched the 1960s roundabout to two-way traffic on 27 May 2019, with its north-west arm to close to all traffic for good. The side streets are Hackney's. On the council's parking zones list, Charles Square, Corsham Street, Cranwood Street and Haberdasher Street fall in zone A (Wenlock) on the council's zone map, where bays need a permit or visitor voucher from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Outside those hours no permit or voucher is needed, though yellow lines still count. Hackney says estate parking controls are enforced separately from the street zones, so check with the estate office before the day.

My flat is on a high floor of a tower by the junction. Is that a problem?
No. Give us the floor and any rules the building has for trades when you call.
Is a weekend visit dearer?
No. Saturday and Sunday cost the weekday price, and zone A has no controls at weekends, which makes parking simpler.
Can the hob and extractor be done at the same visit?
Yes. A single oven, hob and extractor together are £117, and a double oven with both is £143.
How long is the oven out of use?
About 90 minutes for a single and about 2 hours for a double, ending with the oven heated so you can check it.
