Old Oak Common was grazing land shared by the householders of Acton manor. The Victoria County History gives it 200 acres in 1590, when it was called Old Holt wood and was mostly oak scrub and thorn bushes, and 60 acres in 1618, after the chapter of St Paul's had cleared the trees. Its wells, known by 1613, drew summer visitors to East Acton in the 18th century, and by 1758 two houses stood beside them.
Old Oak Common today: depots and a new station
The common is now known for its railway depots. It has been in Hammersmith and Fulham since 1994, when it moved over from Ealing, and the station HS2 is building there, also in Hammersmith and Fulham, will have 14 platforms, six for high-speed trains and eight for the Great Western, Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express services, for up to 250,000 passengers a day.

Wells House Road and Midland Terrace
The Victoria County History records terraces built from 1901 in and around Victoria Road and Midland Terrace, and terraced houses built about 1906 on a triangular site that had been Wells House farm, cut off to the south and west by railway lines. Ealing's zone PP covers Wells House Road, Midland Terrace and Shaftesbury Gardens, and the census output area that takes in Wells House Road and Midland Terrace shows how the homes are used now: in 2021, 39.2% of its 171 households lived in a semi, 25.7% in part of a converted or shared house, and 47.9% rented privately.

Zone PP runs seven days a week
Wells House Road, Midland Terrace, Shaftesbury Gardens and Old Oak Lane (numbers 22 to 78) are in Ealing's zone PP, Old Oak, which is controlled every day from 8am to 8pm, so a weekend visit falls inside the hours too.
