The Lakeview estate, on a narrow bomb site between Old Ford Road and the Hertford Union Canal, opened in 1958: an 11-storey twin tower of 60 flats between two 2-storey blocks, designed by Skinner, Bailey and Lubetkin and built by the council's own workforce.

Council blocks of the 1950s off Grove Road

The Victoria County History records that bombing had left a single villa on the Lakeview site, and that the blocks were placed so that none had a north-facing front. Smaller schemes went up around it in the same decade. Bunsen House in Bunsen Street, five storeys with 20 flats, and Hooke House in Thoydon Road, with 48, both opened in 1951. Margaret Bondfield House and Beatrice Webb House, with 9 and 15 flats, followed in Chisenhale Road in 1952 and 1953.

Kitchens in blocks of this age were planned around a freestanding cooker, and a refitted kitchen may have a built-in single in its place. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.

Terraced houses in Bow West ward

By 1964 the metropolitan borough owned a three-storey Victorian terrace just east of Lakeview on Old Ford Road and had turned it into flats. Houses of any kind are scarce in Tower Hamlets: 12.0% of its households live in a whole house. Bow West ward, which takes in the Lakeview estate, has the highest share of the borough's 20 wards.

29.1%Bow West households in a whole house, 2021
10.4%in part of a converted or shared house
30.6%renting privately

At the 2021 Census, 29.1% of Bow West's roughly 5,300 households lived in a whole house, nearly all of them terraced (24.9%), and 10.4% lived in a flat inside a converted or shared house. Tenure was split three ways: 36.0% rented from a social landlord, 31.6% owned and 30.6% rented privately.

A family terrace with a knocked-through kitchen has room for a double oven or a range, which takes longer: about two hours for a double and two to three hours for a 90cm range. A flat cut out of the same house usually has a single.

Zone B1 and Roman Road market days

Old Ford sits in Tower Hamlets' parking sub-zone B1, described in 2020 as running from Victoria Park in the north to the railway over Coborn Road and Fairfield Road in the south, between Mile End Park and the A12. The council's zone page lists B1 as controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

Saturday is also one of Roman Road market's three days, with Tuesday and Thursday, from 8am to 6pm. The free one-hour bays the council provides on market Saturdays are for shoppers, so they are not meant for a working visit. Sunday is the one day B1 is not controlled, and it costs the same as a weekday. The council says its zone restrictions apply to public roads only, so streets on council estates have their own.

Questions from Old Ford

I live high up in a tower block. Does that change anything?

Only the time it takes, so tell us the floor when you book.

Can you come on a Sunday?

Yes, at the weekday price, and B1 has no controlled hours on a Sunday.

Can the hob be cleaned too?

Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic hob £23, added to the oven price. If you rent, the invoice can be made out to your letting agency.

I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.

SarahNW3

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
