The Old Bexley Conservation Area was designated in 1972 and eighteen of the buildings inside it carry a listing. St Mary the Virgin stands at the middle of it, a Grade II* parish church of 13th-century origin on a site already recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086, restored by Basil Champneys in 1882 and 1883, and carrying a spire shaped like an octagonal cone balanced on a truncated pyramid.
The village core is protected ground
Styleman's Almshouses went up in 1755 under the will of John Styleman of Danson Park, who died in 1734: twelve two-storey houses set symmetrically either side of a pedimented centre. Freemantle Hall, Victorian, sits on the High Street. Kitchens in stock of that age tend to be small and cut out of a back room, with a freestanding cooker rather than an integrated one. The railway decided what got built here
The line reached Bexley in 1866, which moved local produce to the London markets quickly and turned a farming parish into somewhere a City clerk could live. Builders followed. The largest development of the Victorian period was the Parkhurst and Knoll Road estate on the western edge of the village, put up through the 1880s and sold, according to the sales catalogues printed at the time, to commuters who wanted the train. Those houses are large and most have had the kitchen opened up since. A 90cm range cooker in a Parkhurst villa is £114.

Do you take the racks away with you?
Only as far as the kerb. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, then go back in before we leave.
Will the house smell of chemicals afterwards?
It should not. The soaking happens outside. Indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
My house is listed. Does that change anything?
No. Nothing gets drilled, fixed or altered, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours. A single is nearer ninety minutes.
Said after the sign-off
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
