Bexley's railway arrived in 1866 on a brick viaduct that cut the old village in two, and the arches beside the High Street bridge hold the shops of Mill Row.
A village that grew at a ford on the Cray
Two old roads crossed the River Cray here, one from Eltham to Dartford and the other following the river from Crayford to Orpington. The council made the village core a conservation area on 17 February 1971 and extended it in 1987, and its appraisal of the area counts 18 listed buildings. Across the High Street, Oxford Terrace, three storeys of shops built in 1878, faces the low Styleman's Almshouses of 1755.
After the railway, new roads such as Albert Road and Salisbury Road were laid out for smaller houses, and electrification in 1926 set off a boom in suburban building. The Old Mill by the bridge was rebuilt after a fire in 1966. Hall Place, under a mile up Bourne Road, is a Grade I house in two halves: the northern one built by the Champneys family in the 16th century, the red-brick southern one added late in the 17th.

The census area that runs from Mill Row and Clarendon Mews up Bourne Road to Farm Vale (Bexley 023C) had 881 households in 2021. Of those, 32.2% lived in a terraced house, 26.6% in a purpose-built block of flats and 22.4% in a semi. Only 6.0% had a detached house, and 5.1% lived in a flat in a commercial building, the census category that covers flats over shops.

Parking in the Bexley Station zone
Bexley's road list for its parking zones (checked 4 October 2026) puts the whole of Bexley High Street, Albert Road, Bradbourne Road, Thanet Road, Southwold Road and Farm Vale in the Bexley Station zone, with Bourne Road included as far as Southwold Road. The list gives no hours. The council says the controlled hours are on the signs where you enter a zone, so check the sign on your road and tell us the street when you call. My cottage is in the conservation area. Does that affect an oven clean?
No. The conservation area rules, including the Article 4 directions on some of the terraces east of the railway, are about the outside of buildings: windows, doors, walls and roofs. The oven is taken apart and rebuilt in the kitchen, and nothing is fixed to the house.
I rent a flat over a shop on the High Street. Is the staircase a problem?
No. Mention the floor when you book so the time on site allows for it.
Can the hob on my cooker be cleaned at the same visit?
