By 1869 the Whetstone Freehold Estate Company owned Matthews farm here and had moved its footpaths to lead to Oakleigh Park station, which opened in 1873 in what was then Hertfordshire.
Villas with tennis courts and stables
The estate filled slowly. Apart from a few cottages there were six large houses in 1871, 25 by 1875 and 40 by 1888, some with tennis courts and stabling. Big plots made room for blocks. The county history says the sites of large old houses were built over from the 1930s, with similar building in Oakleigh Park, where only the sports grounds were left, and that gardens in Oakleigh Park were appropriated between 1951 and 1957. In 1953 Wellington House, The Hollies, a brick and concrete range of flats with flat roofs and balconies on the corner of Oakleigh Road North and Oakleigh Park South, won a design award. A cul-de-sac of town houses at Oxford Gardens, off Athenaeum Road, was partly finished by 1968. Sacred Heart School, opposite All Saints, opened in one of the old Victorian houses in 1936.
