Nunhead Cemetery was laid out in 1840 on a 52-acre site on Nunhead Hill, to designs by James Bunstone Bunning for the London Cemetery Company. Southwark's appraisal of Nunhead Green says the cemetery marked the start of building here; until then Nunhead was a hamlet among market gardens and fields.
Almshouses and cottages round Nunhead Green
Early building here was for the retired, who could still find a quiet retreat this far out. In 1834 the Girdlers' Company built seven almshouses on what is now Consort Road, Beeston's Gift, and in 1852 the Metropolitan Beer and Wine Trade Society put up another seven on the north side of the Green; both groups are listed. The south side of the Green is three-storey Victorian terraces, most with shops below, and Scylla Road, once Nunhead Passage, is a cul-de-sac of two-storey cottages. The Pyrotechnists Arms on the corner of Kirkwood Road is named after Brock's firework factory, which was nearby in the 1860s and 1870s.
A flat over a shop on the Green means a flight of stairs; a two-storey cottage usually has the kitchen at the back. Either way the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
The Waverley estate round the cemetery
The streets that ring the cemetery are the Waverley estate, built between 1884 and 1903 by Edward Yates, one of south London's big speculative builders, with Ivydale Road as its main street. The cemetery appraisal notes that Ivydale Road was bombed in September 1940 and August 1944: three 1960s houses fill one gap and six post-war prefabricated bungalows the other. Limesford Road, facing the south-east wall, is the more intact 1880s terrace, with four Edwardian houses set into it. Opposite the cemetery on Linden Grove the housing is 1970s social housing. The cemetery itself closed in 1969, and Southwark bought it in 1975 for a nominal £1.

Nunhead North at the 2021 Census
The census area the House of Commons Library calls Nunhead North takes in the Green, Linden Grove, Consort Road and the station. It had 4,099 households in 2021: 47.1% rented from a social landlord (31.2% from the council), 31.3% owned and 19.7% rented privately. 42.6% lived in purpose-built flats, 28.8% in a terraced house and 14.7% in a house split into flats or shared.

Parking in Nunhead: mostly outside the zones
Most of Nunhead is outside Southwark's controlled parking zones. On the council's parking map the Green, Linden Grove, the station and Ivydale Road are all uncontrolled. The exception is a small extension of zone B (Peckham): Southwark's notice of 23 January 2025 puts permit bays on Old James Street, Whorlton Road, Ellery Street and part of Scylla Road, with the orders in force from 27 January 2025. They run from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, so a Saturday visit there is inside the zone hours. Check the signs at the end of your road, and tell us the street when you book so we know where to park.
