Colville Square, Colville Gardens and Powis Square were built by G. F. J. Tippett between about 1860 and 1875, as long stucco-faced ranges four to six storeys high over deep basements, many with porches on columns.

Three of the ranges back on to shallow communal gardens, and the Survey of London counts 46 houses of four or five storeys in the north-south ranges alone. They were built for large households. At the 1871 census, 45 of the houses held 402 people, 135 of them servants: almost nine to a house. By 1888 the houses had begun to be divided up, 13 of them in Powis Terrace, and the Survey of London notes a street market growing up on Portobello Road beside the estate.
Most homes here are now flats. In Colville ward, 36.9% of the 4,345 households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census and 49.8% in a purpose-built block; just 6.9% had a terraced house of their own.
Ovens four floors up, or below the pavement
In a house of five storeys split floor by floor, the kitchen can be at the top of a long flight of stairs or in the old basement, down the area steps. Converted houses rarely have a lift. None of that changes the clean, only the carrying. Dust sheets go down; the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.
The housing trust that started on Portobello Road
In 1963 Bruce Kenrick founded the Notting Hill Housing Trust, shocked at the poor quality of the housing people were forced to live in here. Its first fundraiser was a stall on Portobello Road market, which raised £24, and in its first year it bought five houses and housed 57 people. The trust is now part of Notting Hill Genesis. In 2021, 33.4% of Colville ward's households rented from a housing association, 14.5% from the council and 29.0% from a private landlord.

Parking near Portobello Road
East of Ladbroke Grove, the council's residents' parking map of September 2024 puts the streets in the band that stays controlled well into the evening on weekdays, so on a weekday the van uses a pay-by-phone bay. Portobello Road itself has been car-free from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday, on the stretches the market uses that day, since the council made the closure permanent in November 2021. A side street usually works better for us; give us your street when you book.

Yes. The extra flights only add carrying time, so tell us the floor when you book.
Will the market stop you getting to me?
Only the market stretch of Portobello Road is closed, during trading hours. We park on a side street.
Where does the cleaning happen?
The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, door glass and seals are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close; otherwise everything is done in the kitchen, at the same price, so ask when you book.
