The last of the turnpike toll gates that gave Notting Hill Gate its name was taken down in 1864. The ground on both sides of the road had been dug for gravel since at least the early 1600s, and some of the pits survived as large ponds well into the 1800s.
The 1957 rebuild put 145 homes on the north side
Sites on both sides of the road date from one scheme. Work began in 1957 on joining the two Underground stations into one, with a concourse under the road, and the road itself was widened for some 700 yards between Kensington Palace Gardens and Ladbroke Terrace. The road works were finished by the end of 1960 and the new buildings about two years later, to designs by Cotton, Ballard and Blow. On the north side, between Pembridge Road and Ladbroke Terrace, the scheme put up shops and 145 homes, some of them in an eighteen-storey block; the south side got shops and offices.
A flat of that period usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a freestanding cooker. If the flat is high up, tell us the floor when you book. On dust sheets, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows.
Detached villas round Pembridge Square
A few steps north the houses are much older and much bigger. Between 1857 and 1864 William and Francis Radford repeated one standard detached house more than thirty times in Pembridge Square: over forty-five feet wide, with a basement, three main storeys and an attic. They began Pembridge Gardens in 1856 to 1857, stucco-fronted Italianate houses of three or four storeys over a basement set close together, after building the double-fronted houses of Dawson Place in the early 1850s. Some ninety more of their houses stand in Holland Park.
A house of that size kept whole has room for a double oven or a 90cm range; divided into flats, each floor usually has its own smaller kitchen.

Renting round the Gate
Pembridge ward, which takes in the north side of the Gate and the squares behind it, had 2,674 households in 2021. Of those, 50.9% rented privately, 36.2% owned and 11.3% rented from a social landlord. Letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, photos of the oven for the checkout file, and keys collected for an empty flat by arrangement.

Parking off the main road
