Norwood New Town was a walled estate: rows of small terraced cottages packed into about nine acres between Rockmount Road and Oxford Road, and home to many of the men who built the Crystal Palace on the ridge above.
The walled estate bulldozed by 1967
The streets inside the wall are listed as Oxford Road, Naseby Road, Dover Road, Crystal Terrace and Eagle Hill. From 1955 Croydon council began compulsorily buying the run-down cottages, and by 1967 the old New Town had been bulldozed; it was rebuilt afterwards on gentler slopes. The streets are still there; the Victorian cottages are not.
So the homes there today are mostly post-war. In the small census area that takes in Naseby Road, Eagle Hill, Crystal Terrace and Hermitage Road (Croydon 001D), there were 801 households in 2021. 38.3% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 17.5% in part of a converted house. 34.7% rented from the council or a housing association, 42.4% owned and 20.5% rented privately.
In a block, the work is in two parts. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass stay in the kitchen and are degreased by hand, with dust sheets on the floor first. Then the oven is put back together and heated so you can look at it lit.
