Frank Murray Maxwell Hallowell Carew bought the Eastbury Estate, Green Lane included, in 1887, the year Northwood station opened, and by 1891 he had laid out the roads and named them after himself and his family.

A big detached house of that period may have a kitchen wide enough for a 90cm range cooker or an AGA, while a semi split into flats is more likely to have a built-in single. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out for a separate soak and clean, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets go down first, and the door is split where its design allows.
Flats over the Green Lane shops
For all the big houses, Northwood ward has more flats than detached homes. At the 2021 Census, 35.4% of its 4,757 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 29.6% in a detached house, and 26.6% rented privately. Along Green Lane the parades have offices and flats on the first and second floors above the shops, and on Murray Road a few houses have given way to modern blocks of flats.

Zone N's lunchtime hour
Hillingdon made the zone N order for Northwood on 15 May 2026, and it came into operation on 26 May 2026. In the draft that the council published with its 18 March 2026 notice, most residents' bays in the Northwood scheme, on Carew Road, Dene Road, Eastbury Road, Frithwood Avenue, Maxwell Road and Murray Road among others, are permit-only for a single hour, 1pm to 2pm on weekdays. A few streets run longer hours, and the pay-and-display bays on Green Lane are charged 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. In Northwood Hills, the same notice has zone NWH bays such as Tolcarne Drive's at 1pm to 2pm on weekdays. A single oven takes about 90 minutes, so a morning visit that runs past one o'clock may need a visitor voucher; the council's resident parking page explains how permit bays work, and the sign by each bay gives its hours.

My address is on the Moor Park estate, HA6. Is that Hillingdon?
No. The Moor Park estate, around Moor Park station and Main Avenue, is in Three Rivers district, Hertfordshire, so Hillingdon's parking zones do not apply there; Moor Park Road itself is on the Hillingdon side. Check the signs on your road, and give us the street name when you call.
Can you come on a Saturday morning?
Yes, at the weekday price. In the draft zone N order the 1pm to 2pm bays are weekday only, though some bays run Monday to Saturday and the pay-and-display bays on Green Lane still charge on Saturdays, so check the sign.
