For a hundred years hardly anything was built at West End. The Victoria County History of Middlesex puts the old hamlet in the west of Northolt parish, about a quarter of a mile south of the manor house of Down, and finds only three houses put up there between 1837 and 1937. In 1845 the land to the north-east of it was described as one of the remotest areas in Middlesex.
A remote hamlet turned council estates
The road came first. Western Avenue opened across the middle of the parish in 1934, and by 1936 Yeading Lane and Church Road had been widened. After the war Ealing council built estates here: the county history lists Medlar Farm (begun 1949) and the Northolt Grange and Lime Trees estates (1951) among the council estates in the West End area. West End is now an Ealing ward covering Northolt south of the A40. At the 2021 Census it had 5,615 households: 48.8% in a purpose-built block of flats, 26.6% in a semi and 17.4% in a terraced house. One census area around Yeading Lane (Ealing 009B, 590 households) is mostly houses: 40.0% lived in a terrace and 32.2% in a semi, and only 18.8% in a flat.
Kitchens in homes of that age have often been refitted, so the cooker could be anything from a freestanding 60cm model to a built-in double in a tall unit. Say which it is when you ring. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. Dust sheets go down before anything comes out. If you are in an upper-floor flat, mention the floor when you call.
Who rents in Northolt West End
Those are the ward's 2021 shares. Of the social renters, most rent straight from Ealing council (23.1% of all households) and the rest from other social landlords. A landlord letting a home here to one household or two sharers needs a selective licence: Northolt West End, as the ward was drawn before the 2022 boundary changes, is in Ealing's second designation, which came into force on 3 January 2023 and runs for five years.

Parking off Yeading Lane
Ealing council publishes street lists for 63 controlled parking zones. The two zones with Northolt in their name, NS (Northolt Station) and QQ, list streets in the neighbouring Mandeville ward, such as Moat Farm Road and Goodwood Drive. Yeading Lane, Ruislip Road, Kingshill Avenue and Hartfield Avenue are on none of the 63 lists. Yellow lines and estate car parks keep their own rules, so check the signs outside, and if your block has a residents' car park, tell us how a visitor gets in.
