The roads around Northolt Park station carry the names of racecourses (Newmarket Avenue, Kempton Avenue, Doncaster Drive, Wincanton Crescent) because the housing stands on one.
The Racecourse estate, built on the old track
A pony-racing track opened at Northolt Park in 1929, beside a station that had opened three years earlier as South Harrow and Roxeth and took the name Northolt Park the same year. The course was the base of the Pony Turf Club, and on the afternoon of 13 June 1938 the BBC sent its cameras out from Alexandra Palace to televise the Northolt Pony Derby. In the Second World War the army took the ground over and Italian prisoners of war were held there.
Racing never came back. The Victoria County History of Middlesex records that Ealing council bought the 124-acre Northolt Park estate in 1946 and began building in 1951; by 1963, 1,084 of the 1,150 homes planned there were finished, including several multi-storey blocks of flats.
Who lives in the Northolt West census area
Kempton Avenue, Goodwood Drive, Doncaster Drive and Newmarket Avenue all fall in the census area the House of Commons Library names Northolt West (MSOA Ealing 003). At the 2021 Census it had 3,897 households. 41.1% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 29.2% in a semi and 21.8% in a terraced house. 31.1% rented from the council or a housing association, 44.0% owned their home and 22.3% rented privately.
Kitchens in council homes of the early 1950s tend to be small. In a room that size the cooker is often a 60cm freestanding model, or a single built in under the worktop with a hob above it. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. On an upper floor the method does not change; mention the floor when you call.

Most of the estate's roads, Kempton Avenue and Newmarket Avenue among them, appear on none of the street lists for Ealing council's 63 parking zones. The exception is a group of roads at the south end of the estate. Goodwood Drive, Brighton Drive, Lewes Close (even numbers), Sussex Crescent and Tenby Gardens are in Zone QQ, which the council controls from 9am to 9pm on every day of the week.
