In 1086 Northolt was held by Geoffrey de Mandeville, and his family kept the manor until about 1230.
Northolt's old village beside the Central line station
Ealing council's appraisal of the Northolt Village Green conservation area, designated in 1969 and inside this ward, says the lord of the manor moved the whole village down from the hillside around 1300 and built a stone church above it. That church, St Mary's, is listed Grade I; its nave is of about 1300 and its chancel was added in 1521. The conservation area still has a few cottages and the Crown inn, and the village green has a Coronation clock tower of 1937 at its north end. Mandeville Road forms the north-west edge of the conservation area and Station Parade the north-east.
The station opened as a Great Western halt in 1907 and was rebuilt for the Central line in 1948. Mandeville Road and Whitton Avenue had been cut across the north of the parish by 1936, and before the war speculative builders developed the former open fields immediately west of the village. Moat Farm, the last of Northolt's 17th- and early 18th-century farmhouses, was pulled down in 1958 for private housing.

Zone NS takes in Moat Farm Road, Kingsmead Drive, the even numbers 2 to 46 on Mandeville Road and part of Eastcote Lane, and the council controls it from 9am to 10am and 2pm to 3pm on weekdays. That leaves 10am to 2pm uncontrolled, long enough for a single (about 90 minutes) or a double (about 2 hours). Check the street signs for any other restriction.
