James Parker put up kilns at Northfleet Creek in 1796 to burn Roman cement, and William Aspdin was making Portland cement here by 1846. The chalk under the town is why.
The Blue Lake is a hole the works left behind
The works passed through APCM and Blue Circle to Lafarge and closed in 2008. What the industry left behind is holes, among them the chalk pit between the A226 and the North Kent Railway line that people here call the Blue Lake. Northfleet station opened in 1849 on the North Kent Line, and the 2021 census counted 29,900 people in the town. St Botolph's church goes back to the 14th century, and Huggens College, the almshouses John Huggens founded in 1847 on Stonebridge Road at the College Road junction, lost its original buildings to demolition in 1968.
Harbour Village puts 532 new kitchens on the works site
Bellway is building 532 homes on the former cement works by The Creek, 372 of them for private sale and 160 affordable, and the mix runs from one and two-bed apartments through to two, three and four-bed houses, which is a wide spread of oven types on one site. A one-bed flat there is a single-oven booking at £77. The extractor hood in a Harbour Village apartment is another £28, and recirculating hoods in new flats hold grease in the filter rather than venting it out.
The method, briefly
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so the flat does not smell of chemicals afterwards. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go. My oven is integrated and I rent. Is that a problem?
No. Integrated ovens come apart the same way. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is what a letting agent checks at the end of a tenancy.
