Northaw village on its ridge
When the Victoria County History described Northaw in 1908, the church and village stood on a high ridge in the west of the parish, and the houses were mostly round a triangular green near the church. It added that the King James Fund drew people to the village and that cottages were hard to get. The fund went back to 1618, when land was bought with money the king had given for enclosing Northaw Common to enlarge Theobalds Park. The church itself burnt down in 1881 and was rebuilt; the 15th-century font, which stands in the churchyard, is the only piece of the old building left.
Along Northaw Road West, numbers 16, 18 and 20 are late 18th-century houses in an L-shaped group, built of chequered red brick under a big tiled mansard roof.
Northaw's housing, street by street
The three Census output areas that cover Northaw (the village and the lanes round it; Cuffley's own streets fall in other output areas) had 938 residents in 2021, and they are not alike. Vineyards Road, Judges Hill, Coopers Lane and Well Road fall in one: there, 69.0% of households had a detached house and 58.3% had four or more bedrooms. The area that takes in Church Lane, Park Road and the Park Road end of Northaw Road West looks quite different. Of its 110 households, 30.0% rented from the council and 44.5% lived in a semi.
In general a big detached house is where a double oven, a 90cm range or an AGA turns up, and a smaller semi or a council home more often has a single oven or a freestanding cooker. Parking for the van in Northaw
The resident permit areas that Welwyn Hatfield lists are Brookmans Park, Cuffley, Digswell, Hatfield, Welham Green and Welwyn Garden City; Northaw is not on the list. A drive, or a space on the road close to the door, is what the van needs, and any yellow line or sign where you live still applies. Cuffley, to the east, and Potters Bar have pages of their own.
