Northaw has a population of around 590. The parish church of Thomas Becket is Grade II listed and dates from 1881, built by C. Kirk and Son of Sleaford to replace a church of 1809, with a north aisle added in 1887 and the choir and vestry in 1893, and its stained glass is complete and original, by Ward Hughes and by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, in windows dated between 1882 and 1895. The manor belonged to St Albans Abbey until the dissolution in 1539 and then passed to William Cavendish and his wife Bess of Hardwick. Nyn Hall, the old manor house, was pulled down in 1774.

Northaw Great Wood covers 223.6 hectares, about 553 acres, and has been a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1985. It takes in the country park run by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council along with Well Wood, Justice Hill and Grimes Bottom, and holds one of the county's largest stretches of ancient hornbeam, with oak and silver birch through it. The entrance sits on Coopers Lane Road. Coppice with standards and pollarding are still worked there.
