The Woolwich Ferry lands at North Woolwich. It opened on 23 March 1889 and is still free, carrying cars, vans and lorries as well as people on foot.
A piece of Kent on the Essex bank
Until 1889 North Woolwich belonged to the parish of Woolwich, in the historic county of Kent, although it lies on the Essex side of the Thames. It then went into the new County of London, and it has been part of Newham since 1965. The name itself probably comes from the railway station, opened in 1847 and closed in 2006. Its old building on Pier Road, designed by Sir William Tite, is listed at Grade II with its turntable and platform lamps.
Council flats by the ferry, new blocks on Pier Road
The streets around the ferry are mostly flats. In the census area covering Albert Road, Pier Road, Glenister Street, Robert Street and Storey Street (Newham 041C), 87.5% of households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021 and only 6.2% in a terraced house. Most rented from a social landlord: 59.9%, and 49.9% from the council alone. Another 23.1% rented privately and 13.7% owned. Houses are more common a little west, around Winifred Street and Manwood Street, where 27.6% of households were in a terraced house.
More flats are coming. Populo Living, the council's housing company, is building 350 homes on Pier Road with Hill (223 for private rent and 127 affordable), expected to finish in 2029. In an older flat the cooker may be freestanding; a new block often has a built-in oven with a separate hob. Either way the shelves, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Parking in the Royal Docks East zone
Albert Road, Pier Road and the streets behind them are all in Newham's Royal Docks East parking zone, which began in April 2017 and is controlled every day from 8am to 6.30pm. Weekend visits cost the weekday price, but the team still needs a legal bay near the door.
