North Stifford has 13 listed buildings and no conservation area. Thurrock Council's rural settlement assessment of December 2023 counts them, from the Grade I church of St Mary the Virgin to Lilac, Viola and Wren Cottages on the High Road, and says there is a strong case for investigating a conservation area round the central High Road.
A High Road village between the Mar Dyke and the A13
The village is squeezed between the Mar Dyke valley to the north and the A13 to the south, which the same study credits with keeping it from merging with the neighbouring towns. It runs east to west along the High Road and north to south down Clockhouse Lane, with detached houses along Sherwood facing the village green and the cricket pitch. Most homes are detached and set in their own plots; there are some semi-detached houses, and some terraces on the east side of Clockhouse Lane. The older parts are built at about 15 homes per hectare.
Those two figures come from the 2021 Census for the two output areas that cover the village, 262 households in all. A large detached kitchen is the most likely place for a 90cm cooker, either a range or a wide built-in single.
Houses on the old Ardale School site
West of Clockhouse Lane is newer housing. Frank Baggallay's cottage-home village for the Stepney Union went up there in 1901: eleven buildings on 86 acres for 200 boys and girls, with workshops and a water tower between the boys' cottages and the girls'. It later became Ardale School, which closed in the 1990s; most of it was pulled down in 2002 after planning permission for housing. The principal house and the water tower survive. The converted tower, four storeys high, stands at the centre of the new streets, and almost every new house there is two and a half storeys. Kitchens of that age are usually fitted, with a built-in single or double oven.
Wide single oven or 90cm range?
A wide single and a 90cm range are priced differently, so it helps to know which one you have. A wide single is a built-in oven wider than the standard 60cm, with one large cavity. A 90cm range is a freestanding cooker, usually with two ovens side by side and a hob on top, and takes 2 to 3 hours. Parking at a North Stifford house
Thurrock Council's list of permit parking zones has no North Stifford road. The settlement assessment notes that some deep front gardens have been paved for cars, so there may be room for the van on the drive; say so when you book. The High Road is busy, so a space off the road helps.

It has a Grays postal address and sits in Thurrock's Stifford ward, but it is a separate village. Thurrock's pages are grouped under Grays.
Our cottage on the High Road is listed. Does that change anything?
The oven is cleaned the same way. Dust sheets go down first, the removable parts come out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the rest is cleaned by hand indoors.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, and a single about 90 minutes. You look inside the lit oven before we leave.
