North Ockendon grew up where the road from Bulphan to Upminster, now Fen Lane, crossed the road from Brentwood to Grays. The village forge and the blacksmith's house still stand at that crossing.
North Ockendon's two hamlets
Havering made the village a conservation area on 11 April 1990. It is two hamlets joined by a bridleway across the fields, with no direct road between them. The eastern one sits round the Ockendon Road and Fen Lane junction: Castle Cottages, a row of small 19th-century terraced houses, with a listed timber-framed house of about 1700 at the end, the 17th-century Old Bakehouse and Adeline House, from the early 19th century.
The western hamlet is Church Lane, a dead end lined with Victorian cottages in small groups. The old school (now Bell House and Benyon House) and the reading room have both become homes, and Hall Farm was turned into housing in 2003 beside the moat of North Ockendon Hall, the Poyntz family's house, which was damaged by bombing in 1944 and later pulled down. The lane ends at St Mary Magdalene, listed Grade I. At Stubbers, the botanist William Coys grew England's first yucca in 1604.

North Ockendon has no census figures of its own. The two output areas that contain it stretch over much of the rural east and south of Upminster ward, from St Mary's Lane down to Aveley Road, and in 2021 they held 246 households between them. About two in five homes (39.5%) were detached, 76.4% of households owned their home and 21.5% rented privately; thirteen lived in a caravan or other mobile or temporary structure.
