North Ockendon is the easternmost settlement in Greater London and the only inhabited part of it lying outside the M25, roughly 18 miles east-northeast of the centre. It is a dispersed Green Belt settlement rather than a village with a high street, and the conservation area covers two hamlets joined by an old track-way.
The census counted it in hundreds
There were 351 people here in 1891 and 291 in 1931, and it still sits in the Upminster ward with an Upminster post town on the letters. Scattered farmhouses and cottages make up the stock, so cookers here tend to be free-standing rather than fitted galleys. St Mary Magdalene keeps the manor's record
The church is Grade I listed, mostly 14th-century on the site of something older, with a 12th-century south doorway, a 13th-century arcade and a 15th-century tower, and inside it are monuments to the Poyntz family, who were lords of the manor from about 1350, and to the Russells of Stubbers. The Poyntzes built North Ockendon Hall in a moated enclosure early in the 16th century. A moat and a Grade II listed garden wall are all that survives.

Stubbers, the stately home demolished in 1955, is now a 130-acre activity centre on Ockendon Road, the spine of the place. Buses are thin: route 370 links Upminster, Romford and Lakeside, and route 347, once the least frequent regular route in London, stopped running in January 2025. Nobody is walking to this job. Do you actually come out this far?
Yes, seven days. The van carries its own heated tank and its own water, so a Green Belt address makes no difference to the work.
My cooker is free-standing, not integrated. Is that a problem?
No. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in the tank outside, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.
Will the house smell of it afterwards?
It should not. The soaking never comes through the door, and what we use inside the kitchen is not doing the stripping.
How long does it take?
