St Charles' Hospital on Exmoor Street began as an infirmary, built in 1878 to 1881 by the St Marylebone Poor Law guardians for their sick poor, in what is now Dalgarno ward.
The 1930s flats round Dalgarno Gardens
Many of the older blocks near the hospital date from between the wars. In 1929 and 1930 the Sutton Dwellings Trust built 540 flats on the land north of Dalgarno Gardens. In 1932 Kensington council bought nine and a half acres to the east, which the Survey of London calls the last vacant building site of any size in the borough, and by 1938 the Sutton trustees, the Kensington Housing Trust and the Peabody Donation Fund had put up some 545 more flats there.
At the top of Ladbroke Grove stands Kensal House, finished in late 1936 for the Gas Light and Coke Company on the site of a disused gasholder: 68 flats by Maxwell Fry, planned with Elizabeth Denby and fitted out to show what gas could do in a working family's home. It has been listed Grade II* since 1981.
Flats dominate the census figures. In Dalgarno ward, 68.1% of the 2,778 households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, and 64.5% rented from a social landlord: 41.8% from a housing association and 22.8% from the council. Only 13.9% rented privately.
An oven clean in a block of flats
Flats of that age usually have a narrow kitchen, often with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single the landlord fitted. The size of the room does not change the job. Dust sheets go down, and the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.
Newer flats are arriving too. The council's 83 flats on Barlby Road, in four buildings named to mark the Notting Hill Carnival, were due to be finished in spring 2026 (the council's word in July 2025), with 38 for social rent and 10 for key workers. Residents' bays north of the Westway
Kensington and Chelsea's residents' parking map, issued in September 2024, gives every street north of the Westway the same hours for residents' bays: 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 1.30pm on Saturdays. During controlled hours a visitor's van has to use a pay-by-phone bay, and the council does not issue visitor vouchers. Bays near the estates fill up, so the street name helps us plan where to stop.

Can the invoice go to my landlord or letting agent?
Yes. Landlords and letting agents can have it in their own name, with photos of the finished oven for a checkout file on request.
Do you come out at weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, and weekends are charged at the weekday price. On Saturdays the residents' bays here are controlled only until 1.30pm.
Is Latimer Road a separate area?

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
