In the 1820s and 1830s the Tally Ho Coach Company kept 16 horses near the corner, the first change of horses for the Birmingham coach. The county history calls the stabling at the junction an 'unfortunate speculation'; it was abandoned in 1837.

North End, first recorded in 1462, had few houses until Finchley Common was enclosed in 1816. The county history says the railway of 1867 turned it into the suburb of North Finchley, and by 1909 the shop fronts along the Great North Road ran without a break. Trams ran from Highgate to Whetstone from 1905; Barnet Council's local history says they created the shopping district. The Gaumont cinema opened in 1937, closed in 1980 and came down in 1987. On its site artsdepot opened on 23 October 2004, with flats above it.

In the census area the House of Commons Library calls North Finchley (Barnet 019), 42.4% of the 4,718 households in 2021 lived in a purpose-built block and 16.5% in part of a converted or shared house; in the census tenure table, 45.6% of households rented privately. A flat over a shop is likely to have a small kitchen with a built-in single or a narrow freestanding cooker, and a staircase down to the street.

The council houses off Woodhouse Road
East of the High Road, Finchley Urban District Council bought most of the old Woodhouse estate (36 acres) in 1915. It built about 100 houses at once, started 200 more in 1919, and added 50 in 1928 and 72 in 1930. The county history, describing the area as it was in 1977, says Woodhouse Road kept its large mid-Victorian house, by then a school, with municipal and other housing of the 1920s to the south.

Parking near Tally Ho Corner
