North End was a hamlet of Crayford parish with 191 people in 1848, strung along what is now Northend Road between Colyers Lane and Boundary Street.
An old name between Erith and Slade Green
The farmland has gone and the name hangs on in a few places: Northend Road, the Northend Baptist Church, and the council ward. North End had its own ward from 1978 until 2018, when Bexley redrew its wards and Slade Green and Northend was one of the replacements. Erith Park, on the old Larner Road estate
The biggest change came on Larner Road. Orbit and Wates spent six years replacing the estate's seven tower blocks with 587 houses and mid-rise flats, now called Erith Park, and celebrated completion in September 2019. About 80% of the new homes are for affordable rent or shared ownership. A brick sculpture at the entrance, made partly with bricks residents decorated, recalls the Victorian brickmaking on the site.
At the 2021 Census the area that holds Larner Road (Bexley 008A) had 461 households: 55.3% in a purpose-built block of flats, 42.7% renting from a social landlord and 11.1% in shared ownership. A kitchen built in the last few years usually has an oven fitted under the hob or in a tall unit. It stays in its housing; the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, over dust sheets.
Manor Road and the streets towards the river
Further east, around Manor Road, Manor Park, Turpin Lane and Wheatley Terrace Road, the census area Bexley 008B had 709 households in 2021, 47.2% of them in flats. Private renting there, at 31.4%, was about double the ward's 16.1%. Next door, around Bilton Road and Canada Road (Bexley 008C), semis and terraces made up most of the 706 households and 62.7% owned their home.
