North Ealing station opened on 23 June 1903, built by the District Railway on its extension from Ealing Common out to Park Royal and Twyford Abbey, and it now sits on the Uxbridge branch of the Piccadilly line between those two stops. The houses went up around it.
The stock up the hill runs large
This end of W5 is substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas and semis, with Castlebar Hill filling in later, Edwardian semis taking the leftover plots in the early 1900s, arts-and-crafts bungalows arriving in the 1930s and detached post-war houses after that. Big houses tend to mean big cookers. A 90cm range cooker is £114 and a two-oven AGA is £143, and both are on the same fixed list as everything else, because there is no premium here for the postcode.
The conservation lines have moved twice
Mount Park was designated a conservation area in 1991, extended westward in 1995 to take in the ground between Eton Rise and Castlebar Road, and extended again in 2004 to pick up Queens Walk with parts of Hillcroft Crescent and West Walk. Castlebar Hill itself forms the northern edge of the Grange and White Ledges conservation area, which was designated in 1995. None of that has any bearing on an oven. It does tell you the kitchens are mostly original rooms in old houses rather than open-plan boxes, which is why the dip tank stays in the van: racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak outside, and only the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done indoors, by hand, with non-caustic products.

We have an AGA. Does it have to be cold?
Yes. A two-oven AGA needs to be switched off well ahead, usually the night before, because we cannot work on it hot. Tell us when you book and we will talk you through the timing.
Is a range cooker just a bigger single?
No. A 90cm range is £114 rather than £77 because it has more cavities, more shelves and far more to lift out to the tank.
Do you charge more up here than in the rest of Ealing?
No. The price is set by the appliance, not the address, and it is fixed on the phone before we come out.
Can you park on the villa streets?
Parts go to the van and back, so we want to stop within carrying distance of the door. Where the bays are tight we sort it out ourselves.
