North Dulwich station was built in 1866-68 to designs by Charles Barry Jnr for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, and has been listed Grade II since 29 July 1987. Its addresses are split three ways: SE21 and SE22 around the station, SE24 on the Sunray Estate to the north; both are in Southwark's Dulwich Village ward.
The Sunray Estate, council cottages from the early 1920s
After the First World War, Camberwell Borough Council wanted the grounds of Casino House, a late 18th-century house on the Dulwich Estate. The council threatened to use its compulsory purchase powers under the 1919 Housing Act, and the Dulwich Estate granted a 200-year lease instead. Edwin Hall, architect of the Progress Estate at Eltham, laid out the cottages on garden suburb lines in the early 1920s; the Dulwich Estate puts the total at 290 homes. Part of the old grounds, including the lake, became Casino Open Space and was renamed Sunray Gardens in 1923.
Southwark made the estate a conservation area on 20 January 2009, covering Sunray Avenue, Sunray Gardens, Casino Avenue, Nairne Grove and Red Post Hill, south to the station. An Article 4 Direction from 1987 already controlled some outside alterations. A cottage kitchen is usually small, so the oven is typically a freestanding cooker or a built-in single. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Dulwich Village ward had 3,769 households at the 2021 Census. Of those, 68.4% owned their home and a third (33.7%) owned it outright. Semi-detached houses (32.2%) and terraced houses (32.6%) far outnumbered purpose-built flats (10.6%). Family houses of that kind are where double ovens, range cookers and the odd AGA turn up.

Zone P and the Dulwich Village zone
North Dulwich has its own zone on Southwark's zone list: P, North Dulwich and Denmark Hill, controlled noon to 2pm, Monday to Friday. The Dulwich Village zone, DV, is controlled from 8am to 9.30am and 3pm to 5pm on weekdays. Outside those windows, and all weekend, permits are not needed; check the sign on the bay for the street you are on.

Do I need Dulwich Estate consent for an oven clean?
The Dulwich Estate's Scheme of Management, approved by the High Court in January 1974, asks freeholders for prior approval for things like changing the outside of a house or making significant changes to a garden. An oven clean alters neither; if you are unsure, ask the Estate.
My Sunray Avenue house has an SE24 postcode. Is it in Lambeth?
No, the Sunray Estate is in Southwark's Dulwich Village ward. Lambeth starts further west along the road called Herne Hill; that side is covered on our Herne Hill page.
Does zone P matter for the van?
Zone P is only controlled from noon to 2pm on weekdays, according to the council's list. Zone P is not controlled at weekends, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price. Check the sign on your street.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours; a 90cm range takes 2-3 hours.
