Nos 168 and 170 North Cray Road are a former Church of England school, built in 1860 and the village school until 1959; today they are two houses.
A village either side of a dual carriageway
In the 1960s the winding lane through North Cray was straightened and widened into the dual carriageway that is there now, and many of the old houses on its east side were pulled down. One, a timber-framed hall house, was taken apart and rebuilt at the Weald and Downland museum near Chichester. On the west side much survives. Nos 152 and 154, next to the White Cross pub, are timber-framed, weatherboarded cottages that probably date from the 16th or 17th century. Loring Hall, built about 1760, was once Lord Castlereagh's home. Across the road, the Dower House is divided into flats. Bexley made the village a conservation area on 19 February 1992.
The council estate came later. North Cray Place, the house beside St James's church, was pulled down in 1962, and Sidcup and Chislehurst Urban District Council used its site for the North Cray housing estate. The housing there is now on The Grove and St James Way, some way south of the old village.
In the census area that covers the village and Bunkers Hill (Bexley 028A), 51.7% of the 656 households lived in a semi in 2021, 26.5% in a purpose-built flat, and 27.7% rented from a social landlord; St James's church, further south in North Cray, is in a different census area (Bexley 028B). In an old cottage the kitchen is often a later addition with whatever cooker fits; a flat more often has a standard 60cm oven. Whatever the oven, the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in the kitchen.

Stopping the van on North Cray Road
The village stretch of North Cray Road is not in any of Bexley's controlled parking zones; the only listed length runs from Manor Road to No. 68, at the Bexley end (council list, checked October 2026). Water Lane and Leafield Lane are short cut-off pieces of the old road, and Bunkers Hill is a narrow lane, so tell us which side of the road you are on and whether there is a drive. Do you clean ovens in the Dower House flats?
Yes, as long as there is somewhere for the team to park. The racks and trays come out to be cleaned separately, and the oven is reassembled and heated before you inspect it.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours on site. A single takes about 90 minutes.
Do I need to empty the kitchen?
No. Clear the space in front of the oven and switch it off in time to cool. Dust sheets go down before anything comes apart.
