Newington is an old name, "the new farm" in the Survey of London's reading, and the village probably grew up about the year 1200. The parish church of St Mary Newington stood on the west side of Newington Butts until 1876, when it was pulled down so the road could be widened. Its replacement, on the east side of Kennington Park Road, was consecrated the same year.

Manor Place, Penton Place and Amelia Street were laid out first; their 18th-century houses were replaced in the 1880s and 90s by blocks of dwellings and three-storey terraces. Several groups of streets went up under the Brandon Trustees and the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury around 1850. St Paul's church in Lorrimore Square, designed by Henry Jarvis, was consecrated in 1856, and the houses in the square were finished at about the same time.
Older still is the L-shaped group of late 18th and 19th-century houses that make up the Kennington Park Road conservation area, with St Mary's at its north end. In a house of that age the kitchen may be in the basement or at the back of the ground floor. Whichever it is, the racks, trays and side runners come out for a separate soak and clean.
The Brandon Estate towers by Kennington Park
The same name is on the post-war Brandon Estate, around Otto Street, designed by Edward Hollamby for the London County Council with 18-storey tower blocks looking over Kennington Park and streets of kept Victorian houses next to new ones.
