The four brick houses at nos. 52 to 55 Newington Green, on the west side of the square, were built in 1658 on the site of a single copyhold house and its orchards.
One square, two councils
The north side of the green was in Stoke Newington parish and the other three sides in Islington, and the line still holds. Hackney's Newington Green (North) conservation area, whose designation report dates from 2004, is drawn tightly around the historic properties facing the green on that side and completes Islington's Newington Green conservation area to the south.

Flats on the north side of the green
By 1929 every building on the north side except the bank, the chapel and the Mildmay club had become shops, and in 1983 the 18th-century houses at nos. 35 to 39 were mostly hidden behind projecting shop fronts. Today 39 of the 46 addresses Hackney lists for that side are flats. Flats in older converted buildings often have small kitchens, and the oven is often a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker.
Stairs only add time. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat. Dust sheets go down first.
Council flats in Mildmay ward
Islington's Mildmay ward, which covers the other three sides of the green, had 6,151 households in 2021. 33.8% of them rented from the council and 9.5% from a housing association, 29.3% rented privately and 26.1% owned their home; 48.3% lived in purpose-built blocks of flats. Parking on each side of the green
On the Hackney side the bays are in zone M (Clissold), controlled until 6.30pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturdays; Hackney's zone list has the longer hours for Emirates Stadium event days. On the Islington sides the zone is Islington's, and each of its zones has its own times, shown on signs in the area. Tell us which side you are on when you book.

I live above a shop. How much of the work is done in the flat?
The cavity, door glass and seals are cleaned by hand, normally in your kitchen, with dust sheets down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately.
Can you come at the weekend?
Yes, seven days a week, at the weekday price.
How long will a single oven take?
About 90 minutes, and about two hours for a double. You check the oven, lit, before we pack up.

Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
