The copper-roofed bus shelter outside Newbury Park station was designed by Oliver Hill for London Transport and built between 1947 and 1949. It won an award of merit in the Festival of Britain architecture awards of 1951 and has been Grade II listed since 1981.
The houses that followed Eastern Avenue
Before the shelter there was the road. Work on Eastern Avenue, now the A12, began late in 1921, and the booklet printed for its official opening in March 1925 described the stretch beyond Ley Street as a section "known as Hatch Lane", crossing the railway at Newbury Park station. Between the wars, as the Victoria County History puts it, Ilford's built-up area spread north through Gants Hill and Newbury Park to Barkingside.
The streets south of the A12, such as Wards Road and Lynn Road, are in Newbury ward. It had 4,306 households in 2021, and 46.5% lived in a terraced house; 20.3% had a semi and 19.5% a purpose-built flat. Most of those households (57.1%) owned their home and 34.3% rented privately.
An interwar terrace was built with a small kitchen. When one is refitted, a built-in single under the worktop is the usual choice, sometimes with a pyrolytic cleaning setting.

Parking on Wards Road and near the station
On Redbridge's permit zone map, Wards Road, Lynn Road and Cranley Road are outside the controlled zones. The zones near the station are small and run long hours. Zone Newbury A is two small pockets either side of Eastern Avenue, west of the station, and includes Badger Close and Artillery Close; it is controlled from 8.30am to 9pm every day. Wessex Close, east of the station, is in an extension of zone Newbury Park B, controlled from 7am to 7pm every day. In those streets parking in those hours needs a permit, and the council issues visitor permits. The council's map asks drivers to read the signs, as times do change.

Do I need a visitor permit on Wards Road?
The council's map shows Wards Road outside the permit zones, so the van should be able to park without one. The signs on the street have the final word.
