New Eltham station opened on 1 April 1878 as Pope Street, beside a crossroads where Footscray Road met Cross Lane, now Southwood Road, and Pope Street, now Avery Hill Road. Little is left of the hamlet it was named after apart from Theobalds Cottages, a terrace of the late 18th century.
From Pope Street to New Eltham
Southwood Road and the streets round the station were laid out from 1879. The station became New Eltham on 1 January 1886, though Pope Street stayed on the name boards as a suffix until October 1927. A 1920s postcard in the University of Greenwich's Ideal Homes collection shows semi-detached houses on Southwood Road near Gerda Road, with tile-hung bays and brick pediments over the front doors, and an aerial photograph of June 1931 already shows housing off Sidcup Road. The neo-Georgian library on Southwood Road dates from 1931, and the park beside it, Southwood Park, appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1957-8.
Southwood Road takes its name from Southwood House, an 18th-century house that is now part of the University of Greenwich; the university's campus and Avery Hill Park are on the Avery Hill page, and the High Street and the older estates on the Eltham page.

The House of Commons Library calls the census area that includes Southwood Road and Bercta Road New Eltham (Greenwich 032). It had 2,448 households in 2021, and 62.3% lived in a semi-detached house, against 14.4% in a purpose-built flat and 11.1% in a terrace. Three households in four (74.3%) owned their home; 13.1% rented privately.
Semis of the 1920s and 1930s were usually built with a modest kitchen at the back. Where one has been extended into the garden, there is often room for a built-in double or a wide range where the first cooker stood.

Parking in the New Eltham zone
On Royal Greenwich's CPZ map, the streets round the station, including Bercta Road, Novar Road, Blanmerle Road and the station ends of Footscray Road, Southwood Road and Avery Hill Road, are in the New Eltham zone, code N. Permits apply Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 11am, so an afternoon visit falls outside the zone's hours. A few hundred metres east of the station the streets belong to Bexley, which runs its own zone. The council calls its map a guide only, so the signs on the street decide.

Mostly Greenwich. The streets by the station are split between Eltham Town and Avery Hill ward and Mottingham, Coldharbour and New Eltham ward, and SE9 streets a few hundred metres east of the station are in Bexley. The price is the same on both sides.
