New Barn House stands in the middle of the village, timber-framed and sixteenth-century, listed Grade II in 1982. Nineteenth-century maps show it as New Barn Farm. The village that grew up around it takes its name from the old New Barn Estate, and almost everything else in it is a good four hundred years younger.
The village spent thirteen years split across three districts
Historically New Barn was divided between three parishes, with Southfleet holding the greater part including New Barn House, New Barn Road, Southfleet Avenue and the western ends of Longfield and Fawkham Avenues, and Longfield and Northfleet taking the rest, so when the Local Government Act 1972 took effect in 1974 and dealt those parishes out it put one village into Dartford, Sevenoaks and Gravesham at the same time. That was only fixed in 1987, when New Barn was unified and moved into the new parish of Longfield and New Barn, inside the borough of Dartford. The parish council now runs four wards. New Barn West returns three councillors and New Barn East four.
A compact estate ringed by open fields
There is almost nothing here but houses. New Barn is described as purely residential with little in the way of services, a recent development sitting as a compact block surrounded by open fields, and it holds a population of roughly 3,100 against a whole-parish figure of 4,866 at the 2001 census. So it is the bigger of the parish's two settlements and the one with fewer shops. The work here is domestic, on avenues and closes, with off-street parking and no permit zone.
