New Barn House, a timber-framed building of the 16th century on New Barn Road, was listed at Grade II on 17 March 1982 and still stands in the middle of New Barn.
Detached houses and bungalows on the hill
The village sits on a hill about 300 feet up, on the north side of the dry valley that Longfield lies in, with open fields round it. Most of the houses date from after the war. Valuation Office council-tax records for March 2025 list about 1,250 homes in the two small census areas that cover most of New Barn and the neighbouring Longfield Hill: roughly 47% built between 1965 and 1982 and another 22% between 1945 and 1964. Some 41% are bungalows. Longfield Avenue, Fawkham Avenue, Southfleet Avenue, Kenwood Avenue and Hill View Road are among the roads.
The 2021 Census counted 3,070 people in the nine output areas that make up New Barn. Of the households, 73.0% lived in a detached house and 24.8% in a semi; terraces and flats came to about 2% between them. Ownership was 94.9%, and 60.4% owned outright.
Detached houses can have room for a 90cm range or an AGA. For a range, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the ovens, the fan covers and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.

Is New Barn in Gravesham or Dartford?
Dartford. Before the parish of Longfield and New Barn was formed, the village was split between the old parishes of Southfleet, Longfield and Northfleet, and from 1974 that put it in three districts: Dartford, Sevenoaks and Gravesham. The east end of Longfield Avenue, where the postcodes become DA13, is in Gravesham.
Is New Barn part of Longfield?
It shares a parish with it but is a separate village, with open land between the two. Longfield has its own page.
Can you clean an AGA?
Yes. A two-oven AGA is £143 and a four-oven one is £187. It has to be switched off the night before so it is cool, and the AGA cleaning page explains the rest.
Will the oven be ready to use when you leave?
Yes. It is put back together and heated, you look inside, and if a corner is not right we put it right before we go.
