In 1940 a land mine exploded in the churchyard of St Thomas the Apostle on Shonks Mill Road. The church, whose timber tower is now dated to about 1250 or earlier, was repaired and is listed Grade I. In the same war Slades Farm, also in the parish, was destroyed outright by enemy action.

At 4,518 acres, Navestock was one of the largest parishes in its hundred when the Victoria County History described it in 1956. Its houses are spread over several hamlets.
